Batanes has been part of the Philippines since Spanish colonial rule, later confirmed under the 1898 Treaty of Paris (which ceded the Philippine archipelago, including its outlying islands, to the US, later transferred to Philippine independence in 1946). It’s administered as a full province today, with its own governor, representative in Congress, and local government units. There’s no active territorial dispute over Batanes itself — unlike the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea features, Batanes’ status isn’t contested by Taiwan, China, or anyone else.

The only reason it comes up in geopolitical discussions is proximity: if there were ever a Taiwan Strait conflict, Batanes’ closeness to Taiwan makes it strategically relevant (there’s been talk of it hosting radar/surveillance assets), but that’s a strategic consideration, not a sovereignty question.
