MG Motor Malaysia has officially launched the locally assembled MGS5 EV, signalling a shift to full-scale CKD production in Malaysia following the model’s initial line-off in Melaka earlier in March.

The launch strengthens MG’s localisation strategy and expands its electric vehicle (EV) line-up, with assembly carried out at the PEPS-JV facility in Melaka in partnership with EP Manufacturing Bhd, supporting supply chain development and local automotive participation.

Built on a rear-wheel-drive EV platform, the CKD MGS5 EV delivers 151kW and 350Nm of torque, an upgrade over the imported version, offering sharper acceleration and improved drivability for urban and highway use.

Charging performance is rated at up to 150kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in around 26 minutes under optimal conditions, while WLTP range reaches up to 446km depending on variant.

The LUX Long Range variant adds ventilated front seats, leatherette upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat and a hands-free tailgate, positioning the model in the upper tier of affordable EVs in the market.

Safety is backed by seven airbags and ADAS 2.5, including Traffic Jam Assist and Intelligent Cruise Control, with the model holding five-star ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP.

MG Motor Malaysia Managing Director Emory Qi said the CKD launch reflects the brand’s commitment to localisation, innovation and Malaysia’s role as a regional EV manufacturing hub.

“Production at the Melaka facility is estimated at 120 to 180 units per month, with annual output projected between 1,500 and 2,000 units in 2026,” Qi said.

Bookings for the MGS5 EV are now open, with the LUX Long Range variant priced from RM116,900, positioning it as a competitively priced locally assembled EV in Malaysia’s growing electric vehicle market.

The locally assembled (CKD) MG S5 EV is significantly cheaper than the previous fully imported (CBU) version in Malaysia.

Following its local assembly launch in April 2026 at the EPMB plant in Melaka, the MG S5 EV LUX Long Range is priced at RM 116,900, which is approximately RM 11,000 cheaper than the revised price of the CBU version.

Key Price Comparison (2026):
Previous CBU (Imported) Price: Approx. RM 127,900 (revised down from RM 135,900 in Oct 2025).
New CKD (Locally Assembled) Price: RM 116,900.

Why it is cheaper and better value:
Lower Taxes: Local assembly allows the car to benefit from tax exemptions on components.
Higher Performance: Despite the lower price, the CKD model has been upgraded to a more powerful single electric motor on the rear axle, producing
203 PS (151 kW) and 350 Nm of torque (previously 170 PS and 250 Nm of torque.

Better Features: The CKD version adds full leatherette seats, ventilated front seats, and a power-adjustable front passenger seat.
Improved Range: The 62 kWh battery offers a WLTP range of up to 446 km, better than the CBU's 425 km, likely due to a more efficient motor.

Note: The prices and models mentioned above are based on data from April 2026.

MG Motor Malaysia sales up 57%, more MG models coming soon

KUALA LUMPUR: MG Motor Malaysia is marking its second anniversary in Malaysia with stronger sales performance and plans to grow its vehicle line-up beyond the newly launched MG S5 EV CKD.

The update was shared during the brand’s 2nd Anniversary: Passion To Drive outlined its first-quarter performance and upcoming direction for the local market.

The headline number is sales growth. According to MG Motor Malaysia, its sales in Q1 2026 increased by 57% compared to Q4 2025, while year-on-year sales were up 39% versus Q1 2025. That gives the brand a stronger footing as it moves deeper into 2026, especially with more models expected to join the Malaysian range after the MG S5 EV CKD.

The MG S5 EV CKD is now officially priced at RM116,900 in Malaysia. The locally assembled electric SUV is currently available for viewing and test drives at MG showrooms nationwide, with a launch promotion worth up to RM9,000.

The MG S5 EV CKD is also a significant model for the brand locally, as it is MG’s first locally assembled EV in Malaysia. Its roll-out took place in March at the EP Manufacturing Berhad facility in Melaka, marking MG’s move into local assembly and giving the brand a more serious base from which to expand its Malaysian operations.

MG Motor Malaysia is positioning the S5 EV as a more accessible electric SUV for Malaysian buyers, but the bigger story is that it will not be the only new product push from the brand.

With the CKD programme now underway, MG Motor Malaysia says it will continue expanding its footprint through localisation, customer engagement and new product activity.

“Q1 has been a meaningful and encouraging start to the year for MG in Malaysia,” said Emory Qi, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia. “From product recognition to the local roll-out of the MGS5 EV CKD, these milestones reflect the strength of our product line-up and our long-term commitment to the Malaysian market.”

He added, “As we move further into 2026, we remain focused on delivering compelling products, strengthening customer engagement, and continuing to expand our footprint through innovation and localisation.”

MG’s first quarter also included several brand and product milestones. The MG Cyberster was named Performance Car of the Year by MARii, giving the brand another visibility boost in the EV space.

MG’s wider technology direction was also referenced during the update. At MG Tech Day in Frankfurt, the brand showcased MG Hybrid+ and what it describes as the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state battery.

For Malaysia, this is a sign that MG’s future line-up may not be limited to pure EVs alone, especially as hybrid models continue to gain traction among buyers who are not ready to go fully electric.

MG Motor Malaysia will also participate in the upcoming Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show, better known as KLIMS. The brand is expected to showcase its latest developments and future direction at the event.

Jozef Kaban, Vice President of Global Design at SAIC Motor, will also be present to share more on MG’s design philosophy and global design direction as well as their latest and newest tech.

Apart from new models, MG is also working on its network and aftersales coverage. The brand says upcoming expansions include new MG 3S centres in Kuantan and Rawang, while aftersales support will be backed by up to 11 body and paint facilities nationwide.

For now, the MG S5 EV CKD gives the brand a stronger anchor product in Malaysia, especially with the final RM116,900 price now confirmed.

The next test is whether MG can turn that momentum into consistent sales, stronger showroom traffic and a wider vehicle line-up that gives Malaysian buyers more than just another EV option.

Another potential CKD model for local introduction is the all-new MG4, featuring a variant equipped with a semi-solid state battery pack. This makes it the world’s first mass-produced passenger vehicle to be equipped with such technology.
