I am wondering wether old vehicles such as a US Army Willy's Jeep will get high tax?

I am thinking of importing US Army Jeeps from Indonesia. What is the estimated tax price for a VERY old vehicle like this?

And what about motorcycles such as a Vespa?

Does anyone have any experience importing cars to the United States from Malaysia? My family is considering joining me in the States and my dad loves his Volkswagen Scirocco very much (which isn't available in the United States). Car imports to here is very stringent (has to meet tons of quality and emission standards) but let's just put that aside for a moment. Is there anything to do, on the Malaysian side?

And before anyone asks, RHD isn't a problem, there's tons of RHD vehicles in the States. And yes, they're mostly JDM tuners. smile.gif

There's a lot of them actually, perhaps you're looking at the wrong town (perhaps Boise, ID?). xD

I've been scouring Craigslist in major cities where RHD/JDM scene is big, like Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. Several RHD cars available such as R34 Skyline, Silvia S15, and last but not least for the true hardcore fans.. AE86 Trueno. smile.gif

1) I'm thinking about buying a 1990 Nissan Skyline R32 GT-S from Japan. From their end, it will cost me about USD 4800 (~RM15,000) including shipping to Port Klang. Can someone help me calculate the costs incurred once the car lands in Port Klang and registered for Malaysian roads? Thanks! I believe the brand new price (when the car first came out) was about RM105,000 in Japan.

Also, would it be possible to register it as a non-road use car or just have it out of the port without registering with JPJ? What if I intend to bring the car in just for modifications at a local specialist workshop before re-exporting to USA/Canada?

Thanks!

Hi guys, thanks for the infos first of all. I'm a Sabahan currently residing in Canada, and am interested in importing a 2015 corvette z06 back to Sabah, of course the vehicle is not even out yet not until March next year, but that is the plan anyway. I don't think I will be elligible to get an AP as I'm a Permanent resident of Canada, so the student visa, and work permit doesn't apply in my case. Can't seem to find any info for my situation either, any help is greatly appreciated thanks!  thumbup.gif

Interesting! I own a newly bought 2014 Ford Mustang V6 (FP6 Package), thinking about sending that one back to Malaysia sometime down the road. I'm in Texas, USA and will be using an AP since I am studying here right now and my family is here too on working visas. I do know that if you plan on bringing the car in, you need to prove an ownership status of at least 9 months.. maybe in the future can join you. brows.gif

Anyway, this thread is kinda useless. I've been in this thread for YEARS and it's just a bunch of guys asking the same questions. Even the TS hasn't been online in SIX YEARS! laugh.gif

Hey! I have the same case as you. I had a student visa and planned to spend 2 years here. So was thinking of getting a car (still no idea what) back to Malaysia after a year. Can I know the procedure and anything that I need to take note of?

Plus, recommend me any car that is special, as long as it's not muscle cars or anything with a big engine biggrin.gif it may sound nice but long term use, nope.

Hi there! Just wanted to say, I approve of your Rise avatar.. I met my ex girlfriend because she was wearing a Rise costume during Halloween. drool.gif

btw, are you in the US now or what? Anyway, the very basic steps as far as I know is.. (1) email MITI your car info and they will respond with a calculated cost break down of your taxes, tariffs, etc. (2) ship your car back to Malaysia (3) let customs agent/broker handle it (4) car is released from the port. I may be missing a few details here and there but that's the general idea.

Hm, there aren't that many special cars if it isn't muscle cars. Unless you're talking about supercars, which are ALL OVER THE PLACE in Malaysia or Teslas, which is practically useless in Malaysia (and in many US states too). Maybe if you give me a budget, age range, and kind of car you want I can give you some suggestions. American cars mostly have high displacement engines, so that leaves you with European and Japanese cars.. which are plentiful in Malaysia as it is. Anyway that's why my Mustang is 3.7L V6, the roadtax in semenanjung Malaysia should be RM 5,280 and if I register it in my birth state of Sarawak, it'll be RM 1,969. rclxm9.gif

Nah. Muscle cars are slow and not sporty. Since only got 1 chance, I want it to be special enough. Currently looking at the new Cadillac CT6/CTS 2.0T luxury for my dad or Corvette 3LT (speed bumps in Malaysia doh.gif) for myself if i got the money. Other than that, Jags/Range Rovers, etc. is easier to walk into showrooms in msia and buy one.

Can recommend anything? I don't mind Teslas but charging that thing is a pain in the a$$ unless with the supercharger.

Plus we can still drive LHD cars in Malaysia right?

Hahaha I just realized you replied me after half a year! sweat.gif

It's true that 'muscle' cars are slow and not sporty. The new 2015 Mustangs are actually pretty impressive and sporty, but I don't want it since they have RHD models available for that generation. Why drive something that other Malaysians can get? (Even if they're paying 300-600k for a FORD.. suckers!). I'll be swapping out my current Mustang for a Volkswagen GTI soon, I need a fast, sporty car with great handling that's good on gas, practical as a daily driver, a lot of options to install bike rack and most importantly 6-speed manual.. haha. Of course this one isn't the one I'm bringing back la. I drive about 500 miles every weekend commuting between my uni and my parents house.

A Corvette is also another viable option. It's an easily discernible American icon but at the same time it is somewhat up there with the 'supercars' with its styling and performance. At the moment, the new Corvettes are just too expensive for me and my dad, so we might look at the C5/C6 gen Corvettes instead. Corvette should be fine for speed bumps and all that, I mean, everyday in Malaysia you see people driving supercars haha.. or lowered European/Japanese cars. They're fine. By all accounts, those Lamborghinis and such are much more expensive than a Corvette.. haha. I'd go with a Corvette if I were you. There are a few C6 Corvettes in Malaysia and as far as I know, the only new Corvette over there is owned by TMJ. The Cadillac CTS-V is a great car as well, luxurious, practical and FAST. And TMJ also owns one because I saw it at Pavillion valet parking.

Just so you know, there's at least one Tesla in Malaysia.. he's been spotted driving one around, and there are reports of other Teslas owned by people who don't drive it around at all. tongue.gif

And yes, we can drive LHD cars in Malaysia. There's a lot of them around!

Does anyone here have any experience importing a non-running project car to Malaysia? I am planning to import a complete vehicle that isn't working but comes with complete spare parts. Due to the cost of labor and the fact that I am running out of space to keep multiple cars here in the US, I'm planning to use my student AP to ship one back and having it 'kasi bikin' over there.
