Here what I gathered so far in terms of getting a car from the UK to Malaysia.
I am in my third year, which I have roughly 1.5 year to go in going back to Malaysia.
I suppose this would be somewhen a good time in getting a car, if it make sense.
These are the planned steps from what I gathered so far (I am on no.3 right now)
(1) Get Provisional License
(2) Register for Theory Test
(3) Go for Driving Lessons
(4) Register & Go for the Driving Test
(5) Find a car
(6) The money to sustain the darn thing
(7) Bringing it back
---
(1) Get Provisional License
This is necessary as I stayed longer than a year here, my Malaysian Driving license is no good and I will have to start taking a UK license test.
The cost is at £50 for the provisional license, just register it over at DVLA website with your particulars, pay online, submit via mail of the passport to DVLA at Swansea after receiving a mail from them.
Timeline: around 1 to 1 1/2 months
Receive a mail around 2 weeks after registering & paid online. Post passport & form to DVLA via Royal Mail first class with Return envelope. Receive the passport and provisional license separately in the mail around two weeks later.
Costs: £50 (Provisional license) + £13-ish (Royal Mail first class with Return envelope)
(2) After receiving provisional license, then register to take the theory test, also through the DVLA website, which will allocate to your nearest test centre.
Required test:
Theory objective questions (score at least 43 / 50)
Hazard Perception test (score at least 44 / 70)
Note: Must pass both to move forward to register for the driving test.
Test costs: £31 + whatever it costs to get there via public transport.
They allocated me the earliest in three weeks time, no earlier booking possible. This is where I am at right now in these steps mentioned.
Test time 2 hours for both, most likely I’ll get in done within an hour.
If fail either one or both, it is compulsory to retake it again, and pay full amount. I am not sure what will the waiting gap will be for this.
(3) Driving lessons.
Depending on the school / instructor, it’ll cost somewhat £23/hour average.
I am taking a few sessions for me to iron out my bad habits and also their driving culture in order for me to pass their test. This is something I’ll do in between waiting for the theory test and training for the practical.
(4) Driving test (only register after passing the theory)
Register for the exam = £62 per exam
Timeline= I suppose it will be similar, 3 weeks
You could use your driving school’s car, which you’ll pay to rent it.
or you could rent from the test centre, which I think it is at £115 for weekday, £141 for weekend exam.
or you could use your own car, which must be insured, fully serviced (no warning lights on the dashboard lighting up), L-plate installed, well, it should be proper.
If fail, also have to retake and pay the full price again to re-take! (the test fee, the car rental...urgh!)
If pass, re-submit the documents, the provisional license for update to full, pink coloured UK driving license. I suppose this will be another 2 weeks of wait
I am not sure how much this will costs (for the transition of provisional to full-driving license)
---
So, by the time the license is at hand, it’ll take roughly at least 3-4 months, alongside with expenses at least £250 and above, that is hopefully, one doesn’t fail too often for either one of these tests.
This is half the battle.....
I'll update later on the rest.
