Selangor State Executive Councillor Datuk Wong Swee Lin issued a statement on December 18th in response to a media interview yesterday regarding the issue of whether pets are allowed in shopping malls. He stated that many shopping mall managements currently do not allow pets because restaurants within the malls must comply with the Food Hygiene Act 2009, which prohibits any animals from entering restaurant premises. However, given the increasing demand for pet-friendly restaurants, several local governments in Selangor have previously drafted guidelines for such restaurants. He personally led inspection teams and discussed details with the public health and licensing departments of each local government. He emphasized the need to ensure that pet-friendly restaurants not only meet environmental and food hygiene standards but also provide a better experience for pets and their owners. He noted that the lack of unified management guidelines creates a gray area in many pet-friendly shopping malls regarding environmental hygiene, personal safety, religious sensitivities, and the rights of non-pet owners, posing a risk to both businesses and pet owners. Since the Selangor state government currently lacks specific guidelines governing pets in shopping malls, he stressed in yesterday's interview that the need for drafting guidelines should be discussed as needed and in a timely manner. I would like to reiterate that I have not issued any instructions requiring the shopping mall to immediately adjust its operating policies. I also invite the shopping mall management to a meeting to discuss how to create a pet-friendly public space.
