Honda has recently halted or reduced production at plants in North America (Mexico, U.S., Canada) due to a major semiconductor shortage, specifically impacting chips from supplier Nexperia following export controls imposed by China amid Dutch-Chinese geopolitical tensions. This has affected popular models like the HR-V, Civic, and CR-V, with Honda working to resolve the supply chain issue to resume normal operations, though the timeline remains uncertain as of late October/November 2025.

Honda to pause production at plants in Japan, China

Honda Motor says it will halt operations at plants in Japan and China between late December and early January due to a semiconductor shortage.

The announcement comes after the Japanese carmaker temporarily suspended production in Mexico due to disruptions in semiconductor supplies in October and November.

Honda said on Wednesday it will pause production at three automobile plants in China for five days, starting December 29. The factories are operated by Honda's joint venture with a Chinese automaker.

Likewise, production will be suspended at some plants in Japan on January 5 and 6. When production is resumed on January 7, output will be reduced for three days from what was initially planned.

The semiconductor shortage in Mexico stemmed from a dispute between the Netherlands and China over governance of a chipmaker, which led to supply disruptions and forced slowdowns in the United States and Canada.

In its financial outlook for the fiscal year ending March 2026 released in November, the automaker projected an operating loss of 150 billion yen, or more than 960 million dollars, due to reduced output caused by chip shortages, but said that loss could expand

but then there is no much selling point already.
they cant upgrade engine every 2-3 years. changing to better interior material doesnt necessary mean it will remain good in the long run.

It's more than just a thought...more buyers are fedup with too much electronics, and some manufacturers have noticed.

dunno if this less-electronics shift will gain momentum.

It's a choice between selling no car vs selling more mechanical chars.

Most companies can't afford having their factories waste away over a supply issue. Runtime is an extremely important metric to fully utilize the production line that you have.

They can’t, it’s mandated by EU regulations to have ADAS.

Good, fuck having touchscreen in cars.

A friend of a friend suffered total loss from having her honda jazz flooded and the cost to repair all the electronics
was quoted near equivalent to the value of the car itself (workmanship to dismantle everything and put it back together).

Obviously don't jump straight away to safety/compliance, I'm talking about accessories, infotainment systems, etc.
