I believe the admiration comes from the fact that such a small nation (the British) is able to rule 1/4 of the known world and dominate each of the native races they had conquered.

Most Asian countries were relatively confined within their own spheres, not even knowing how wide the world was. Imagine the shock when the ancient rulers saw the world map for the first time and seeing most of it painted in colonial colours.
