"No stock": Samsung raises DDR5 contract price by over 100%
QUOTE
Samsung has reportedly increased the contract price of DDR5 memory by over 100%. Claiming that there is no stock, the Korean Giant has pushed the contract price of DDR5 DRAM near $20. OEMs are likely to pass this price hike on to the consumers in 2026.

It appears the super-inflated DRAM pricing is here to stay, as Samsung has reportedly increased the DDR5 contract price by over 100%. This sudden increase has brought the DDR5 contract price to $19.2 per Jukan on X. Citing Taiwanese media reports, Jukan claims that Samsung informed “downstream customers”, or OEMs, that there is “no stock!”.

Not only has Samsung increased the DDR5 contract price, but the contract price of DDR4 DRAM has also followed suit. Jukan reports that contract pricing for 16 GB of DDR4 DRAM has jumped to $18. So, OEMs and customers looking towards DDR4 memory as a temporary, cost-effective solution may now have to face the same sort of price inflation as DDR5.

Finally, Taiwanese media also remarks that, contrary to expectations of a gradual pricing decrease, spot DDR5 memory prices have seen even worse inflation in December. DDR4 memory prices are also on the rise, with “no signs of resting”.

How will the increase in the DDR5 contract price affect consumers?

While Samsung's DDR5 contract price increase directly affects the OEMs buying memory chips at scale, the OEMs are likely to pass the burden on to the consumers. For instance, Lenovo could bump the price of its 2026 laptop lineup to account for the latest DDR5 pricing bump. Laptop makers could even reduce the amount of memory in entry-level SKUs to save costs. The same could be true for smartphone makers like Apple and even Samsung.

So, if you need a new phone, laptop, or desktop RAM urgently, it might be a good idea to buy what you need right now. We are expecting some major price hikes in Q1 2026, and things aren’t expected to improve until 2027.

I dun think that's the reason, one of the items that I want to buy dun have at 99 mart, so I went to Shopee to check. The manufacturer also no more stock and won't reply to me about why no stock.

Another item also no more stock in 99 mart for months liao. But it is still being made afaik. Something going on.

as usual every few years memory manufacturers will suddenly announce some issues like below but all linked to memory production capacity just to mark up price;

1. accident in plant, fire or whatnot
2. high demand in memory, plant cannot produce fast enough
3. AI datacenter (new excuse)

Bring back memories. Random fire when RAM price too cheap. These fire doesn't happen when RAM price are high.

AI datacenter is really new excuse. But I think days of cheap DIY PC are ending already. Will slowly die out.

Madani announce new law, PC gaming is now banned. All people must turn in their PCs to goverment or face prison. The PCs will be recycled and sent to AI companies for parts

PC gaming banned globally, all gaming PCs must be destroyed. You cannot buy/build PCs anymore. Your only choice is subscribe to AI companies for 'cloud gaming'. Monthly cost USD300 "only"

Then we are truly fucked.

DIY gaming pc survived the crypto boom. It will survive this ai bubble
*
This is wholly my own observation. This time it's different. GPU prices doesn't go down anymore. Top tier gpu such as the 1080ti was launched at 699usd. Top tier today 5090 is 1999usd.

Core ultra 7 is rm1.6k.
i7 6700k was RM1.3k.

Z series mobo used to be rm500 can get, rm800 top tier.
Now rm800 get you basic board.

I for one have no more desire to DIY PC.

it's prolly to do with the current silver crisis

physical silver is virtually out of stock everywhere

paper silver is at ATH price of ~usd63/oz n no one is selling becos the price is fake

samsung executives reported went down to the mines in mexico to secure supply paying sky high prices of well over usd74/oz

historically the price of silver tracks the price of gold in a ratio of about 30:1. recently it reached a peak of 120:1, ie while gold was at ATH, silver prices remained low. it has now come back to around 70:1. there is nothing to justify that USD63/oz for silver is too expensive or fake, if based on historical silver:gold prices. since gold prices are unlikely to come down soon (unless china central bank and rest of world stops buying and start selling), dont expect silver prices to drop either.
