As of early 2025, the main construction site remains abandoned.
" The Big Mosquito Farm": The site is locally notorious for its massive, flooded basement. For years, this stagnant "swimming pool" at the foundation level became a breeding ground for mosquitoes and wildlife (including snakes and fish), posing a health risk to the surrounding area.
LRT Station: The Plaza Rakyat LRT station (Ampang/Sri Petaling Line) is fully operational and sits right inside the abandoned concrete shell. Thousands of commuters walk through the unfinished, rusty corridors every day to transfer to the Merdeka MRT station.
Latest Development (Dec 2024): Because the main redevelopment is still stalled, DBKL (Kuala Lumpur City Hall) recently announced they would unilaterally upgrade the dilapidated pedestrian bridge and walkway connecting the LRT to Jalan Pudu. This infrastructure was supposed to be rebuilt by the developer, but the city could no longer wait due to safety concerns.
Failed Revival Attempts
There have been numerous attempts to revive the project, but none have succeeded yet:
2015: The site was sold to a new developer, Profit Consortium Sdn Bhd, for RM740 million. They promised to pay off the debts and revive the project.
2019-2022: New hoardings were put up, and minor demolition works began to clear the old, rusted steel bars. A sales gallery was even built.
2024: Reports surfaced that the developer requested another extension to restart the project. No major vertical construction has resumed.
