Oh Jimmy don't get them wrong. every country has their own unique way of communication. Malay/ Chinese dialect in Malaysia is a good example.
You understand i understand then ok. If You don't, it will be fun to learn new knowledge

malaysian cantonese influence by multiple local dialect like hakka and hokkien
thats why sounds different compared to pure HK canto, heck even HK canto is different from Shenzhen Canto which is seperated just by a bridge

some of the stuff are got historical reason why they are called that way
ice tea for example back then, kopitiam would order huge ass ice block, shave them to make iced tea, which in a form looks like snow, so they call it xu cha, however with the intro of cheap ice cubes where they would spend it on just plain water thus come the term peng shui

wait till you discover why hokkien for raining sounds the way it sounds

The most stark contrast is $$$

Here we call it "Lui" transliteration from Duit.

Proper cantonese is Chin.

A lot of subtle difference la, but Malaysian generally very flexible can mix match and guess the meaning. Our education system also encourage a lot of guess work in communication, we are moulded to conform to others instead of taking the effort to use the "correct" way.

Each ringgit comprises 100 sen, which is known in Penang Hokkien as lui1. Therefore, lui1 can mean money and can also mean sen. "No money" in Penang Hokkien is boh3 lui1 . To be "well off" in Penang Hokkien is uh33 lui1 (literally, "got money"). To make money, or to earn a profit, is than1 lui1 ; so, to not make any profit is boh3 than1 lui1 .

And it's the same for non-penang hokkiens tongue.gif

I always find hokkien abit weird.

Even mandarin

Ice tea = bing cha (yes not suet cha, but at least same arrangement)

So not only their arrangement is different, the word tea is also different.
