A British-Indian nurse has been jailed for raping a vulnerable colleague and sexually assaulting two other female staff at a care home in Scotland more than seven years ago. Naijil Paul, 47, originally from Kerala, received a prison term of seven years and nine months after he admitted to rape and multiple sexual assaults while serving as the manager of a North Lanarkshire care home.
He was charged with the offences in 2018, but had fled to Kochi right before his trial in December 2019, claiming his father was ill. He was arrested in February this year and pled guilty to the offences in October before being extradited from Delhi in June. He was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Monday, news agency PTI reported.
"In addition to the serious and predatory nature of your offending, notwithstanding the fact you pled guilty, the version of events given by you bears little resemblance to what you have admitted to," the judge said, according to UK court reports.
The BBC Scotland reported that Paul continued to shift blame onto the victims in a pre-sentencing assessment. "The degree of victim-blaming that he has embarked upon does cause me some concern. Although he is assessed at medium risk (of re-offending), that very much underestimates his level of risk," Lord Renucci noted.
According to court, Paul raped a 26-year-old colleague in 2018 after threatening her job security. When the woman returned from sick leave that April, she confided that debt had forced her to come back to work. A week later, Paul warned her she could lose her job due to time off and coerced her into a sex act, telling her to "do what I want" to remain employed.
Prosecutors also referred to two other incidents involving younger care assistants. In one case, Paul tried to kiss a 19-year-old after grabbing her by the hips. In another, he approached a 21-year-old colleague and touched her inappropriately, telling her, "I know you want it. I can tell by your body language".
Although his sentence was slightly reduced from eight years because of his guilty plea, Paul will be monitored for an additional two years after release. He has been placed on the sex offenders register for life and is prohibited from approaching any of the victims.
