QUOTE(Avex @ Dec 11 2025, 10:12 AM) UEC should start looking into China STEM level education at their gaokao syllabus. In the future need more advance chinese smart people as nuclear scientist, space engineers, space mining engineers etc. Chinese should move away with comparing with low level Malaysia education. Even a degree from China now is superior than UM Have you seen the number of Mainland Chinese (international students) in UM these days?https://chinaglobalsouth.com/analysis/china...rolment-trends/ https://mysinchew.sinchew.com.my/news/20250...sinchew/6872633 https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...-economy/147206 |

QUOTE(LDP @ Dec 11 2025, 10:16 AM) QUOTE(talexeh @ Dec 11 2025, 10:17 AM) Penang very much has the power, and has recognised UEC on their end:https://harapandaily.com/2024/10/29/why-not...d-certificates/ "The DAP lawmaker pointed out that UEC is currently recognised by over 200 foreign universities abroad due to its quality as well as by the state governments of Penang and Sarawak." https://www.sinchew.com.my/?p=2943491 "This means that Sabah has become the 5th state in the country to recognize UEC after Sarawak, Penang, Selangor and Melaka. UEC holders meeting the criteria will be able to get admitted into public universities in these states or serve as civil servants with public service department." https://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news/267154...ike-warisan-s-/ "The UEC is currently recognized by the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Five Malaysian states now recognise it in various degrees, namely Sarawak, Selangor, Penang and Melaka https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...-exists/1891723 "Currently, five states — Penang, Melaka, Sabah, Sarawak and Selangor — have announced that they recognise UEC though the students also need to take the Malaysia Education Certificate (SPM) examinations as well." https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...s-says-academic "It receives limited recognition as an entry qualification in Sarawak, Selangor and Penang but remains unrecognised at the national level as a requirement for tertiary education and public service applications." |

QUOTE(talexeh @ Dec 11 2025, 10:31 AM) Penangite here but while those links mentioned that Penang recognises UEC, it plays no role in opening up the path for UEC students in getting into the IPTAs. IPTA's are regulated by the federal government, not by the state. As much as Sarawak was the first state to recognise UEC, Sarawakian's can't use UEC to enter IPTA's either.UEC graduates will still have to opt for SPM in their 5th year in order to land a chance for IPTAs. |

QUOTE(talexeh @ Dec 11 2025, 10:49 AM) Based on my understanding, that's not exactly accurate. Errr, that is not correctSarawak has state-controlled IPTAs that accept (or will accept next year IINM) UEC graduates while other states don't. I haven't read enough to understand if Sabah has similar type of IPTA so not going to comment about it. Point is, unlike Sarawak, the peninsular states that purportedly recognise UEC actually holds no water. There is no such thing as a "Sarawak state-controlled IPTAs" The Sarawak government does 'own' some IPTS'es like Swinburne Sarawak, Curtin Miri, University Technology Sarawak, etc. But make no mistake, these are very much IPTS'es, with according fee levels. But they accept UEC as one of the qualifications that an applicant can use to enter Swinburne Sarawak/Curtin Miri/University Technology Sarawak. After paying IPTS level fees. Which are very much more expensive than UNIMAS and UiTM Sarawak, the IPTA's physically located in Sarawak. Selangor also has their own state owned university, UNISEL, which yes, does accept UEC as a entry qualification. But UNISEL is very much a IPTS. As to why Penang doesn't have a state owned university, that is a question for their people to ask their government. |

QUOTE(talexeh @ Dec 11 2025, 12:27 PM) Thanks for the enlightenment. If that's the case, then I don't see much difference since almost all IPTS in the country do recognise the UEC cert. But it also means that UEC holders can apply for state level jobs in Sabah, Sarawak, Penang, Selangor, and Malacca. talexeh liked this post

QUOTE(Sukhoi35mkm @ Dec 11 2025, 01:18 PM) with UEC + plus passed BM if u r sarawakian, u can get free education at Curtin University Malaysia Sarawak Campus, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Centre of Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) and i-CATS University College. From 2026, but yes. From 2026, the Sarawak Government's Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) will start rolling out. It is limited to Malaysian citizens who are Sarawakian 'K' residents And restricted to the 64 courses approved under FTES. So far no details, but public/media reporting seems to suggest "STEM, Law, Medicine, Accounting, and Finance" related courses. No word if it covers post-grad studies, or only under-grad studies. (BTW, Centexs is not covered under FTES: https://www.theborneopost.com/2025/11/27/sa...cheme-in-2026/) It 'only' covers fees, so things like lodging and accommodation will still need to come from the student/families. Also no detail if it covers students who started their studies before 2026, or any age limit Essentially it is a 'scholarship' for Sarawakian 'K' residents studying specific courses in a list of Sarawak state owned IPTS'es. It is not quite what the IPTA's offer. And has nothing to do with UEC recognition (or otherwise). countingcrows liked this post
