PASIR MAS: A university student was charged in the Sessions Court here today with two counts of unnatural sex and sexual assault against a female Form Five student in a car in Lata Janggut, Jeli, on Nov 29.

The 21-year old pleaded not guilty and claimed trial when the charges were read out before judge Zulkpli Abdullah.

For the first charge, the accused was charged with intentionally committing unnatural sex against a 17-year-old teenager.

The offence was allegedly committed in a Perodua Myvi at a car park in Lata Janggut, Jeli, at 2.30pm on Nov 29.

He was charged under Section 377A of the Penal Code, which is punishable under Section 377B with imprisonment up to 20 years and whipping.

For the second charge, the accused was charged with physical sexual assault against the same victim, at the same location and date.

He was charged under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides for imprisonment up to 20 years and whipping.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Aiysha Na'ilah Harizan appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by Habibah Wahab.

Siti Aiysha Na'ilah earlier offered bail of RM20,000, but Habibah requested a minimum bail, citing that her client was still a university student in Jeli and dependent on his parents.

The court then set bail at RM10,000 for both charges with one surety, and fixed Jan 11 for mention.

It was previously reported that the couple was interrupted by the police before they could have sex in the car parked by the roadside.

Jeli district police chief Superintendent Kamarulzaman Harun had said investigations showed that the suspect had picked up the girl from a school in Jeli and they had stopped to engage in sexual activity.
