Shah Alam to have smart toilet dashboard next year
Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) is developing a smart toilet dashboard to allow people to access and track the location of nearby public toilets in the city.
“This dashboard will display information such as operational hours, name of the maintenance company or contractor and locations of toilets with disabled-friendly facilities,” said Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim.
He said the dashboard was expected to be operational next year.
“This step proves MBSA’s commitment to creating an inclusive and integrated data ecosystem, while supporting the digitalisation agenda at the local authority level,” he said in his speech at the launch of the Shah Alam Clean Toilet Awards and Shah Alam Toilet Day Celebration 2025 at MBSA Convention Centre in Section 13.
MBSA Public Hygiene and Waste Sustainability Department deputy director Haslina Ab Aziz said the dashboard would alert the public of the nearest four- or five-star ranked public toilets they could use and allow users to give their feedback on toilets.
“The dashboard will first be developed for a website format, before an app is introduced.”
Haslina said her department had a dedicated public toilet monitoring unit that carried out inspections of government- and privately-operated public toilets, with inspections of each premises done twice a year.
The Shah Alam Clean Toilet Awards aimed to recognise clean and well managed public toilets in Selangor’s capital city.
The competition featured 11 categories and over RM30,000 in cash prizes.
Under MBSA-Owned Public Toilets those winning in various categories are Jalan Lelangit U8/45 reservoir (public parks), MBSA Convention Centre in Section 13 (council halls), Anggerik Aranda Library in Section 19 (bus terminals or libraries), Laman Niaga U10 in Puncak Perdana (food stalls) and Section 16 Market (public markets).
For Privately-Owned Public Toilets the winners are Nasi Kandar Antarabangsa in Section U13 (restaurants and cafes), Petron in Section 24 (petrol stations), Central i-City in Section 7 (malls), Bukit Rahman Putra Mosque in Section U20 (places of worship), Shah Alam Toll Plaza at Elite Expressway (rest and relaxation areas at highways) and Doubletree by Hilton Shah Alam i-City (hotels).
Mohd Fauzi also reminded Shah Alam eatery operators that from next year, licence renewals would be denied if toilets at their premises failed to meet the “BMW” standard of being clean (bersih), attractive (menawan) and pleasant-smelling (wangi).
“The Housing and Local Government Minister had announced that effective Jan 1, 2026, food and beverage (F&B) operators under city-level local authorities will not be allowed to renew their business licences if they fail to ensure their toilets are at the bersih, menawan and wangi level,” he said.
“This strict action is being taken as F&B businesses have been notified since 2023 and given enough time to understand this new government policy.”
It was earlier reported that the Cabinet, in 2023, decided that F&B premises such as restaurants, hotels and food stalls in urban areas would not be able to renew their licences if their toilets were found to be dirty.
Under the new policy, Mohd Fauzi said eatery operators in Shah Alam whose toilets fail to meet the BMW standard would be given a maximum of three warnings before their licence is revoked and premises shut down.
“This ruling applies even if their business licence is not scheduled to expire anytime soon,” he said, adding that MBSA had shut down 20 F&B premises this year due to hygiene and cleanliness issues.
