Man on travel blacklist caught trying to leave Malaysia with fake passport

KUALA LUMPUR: A man who had been blacklisted from leaving the country was detained yesterday at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 after attempting to use another person's passport.

Immigration Department director general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the suspect was detected at the KLIA Terminal 1 outbound inspection counter by the officer on duty.

He said checks revealed that the suspect was believed to have used an Indian passport with falsified biodata details, or a passport belonging to another individual.

"The operation involved a team of officers and personnel of various ranks from the Intelligence and Special Operations Division, together with the National Registration Department, and supported by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA)," he said in a statement today.

He said the operation team later went to the suspect's residence to locate his MyKad.

"During the inspection, an Indian woman attempted to flee with the suspect's MyKad, but the team managed to stop her.

"Initial checks found that the woman had overstayed. The operation team also seized two Indian passports, a boarding pass, and a mobile phone."

Zakaria said the man was arrested on suspicion of committing an offence under the Passports Act 1966.

"The woman was detained on suspicion of committing an offence under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

"She will also be investigated by the NRD for a possible offence under the National Registration Regulations 1990."

Zakaria added that all suspects were taken to the Immigration Department office in Putrajaya for further action.

"Both suspects were also issued notices to appear at the Immigration Department to assist in the investigation."
