KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 9): Singapore-based data centre developer Empyrion Digital has secured the green light to construct a hyperscale data centre campus in Johor, marking its first foray into Malaysia amid the state’s rapid rise as a regional digital infrastructure hotspot.

Empyrion Digital announced on Tuesday that it has received regulatory approval for both its Electricity Supply Agreement and Data Centre Task Force application for the development.

"Malaysia has emerged as a key destination for hyperscale data centres, driven by strong digital transformation, favourable infrastructure, and government support," the company's chief executive officer Mark Fong said in a statement.

Johor will become new norm soon.

Daily Usage: A typical 100 MW hyperscale center can use around 2 million liters (approx. 528,000 gallons) of water daily, comparable to thousands of homes.

Annual Usage: Large facilities can consume up to 110-200 million gallons (416-760 million liters) annually, notes Dgtl Infra and Dgtl Infra.

real reason is cause

cheapo rate promised by gomen plus development subsidies

after special period of rates and taxes habis, straight away close shop and move elsewhere. Not like need to move big machinery . Very easy to do

AI Overview

Yes, the Johor state government is stopping approvals for less efficient Tier 1 and Tier 2 data centers due to high water usage, focusing instead on more sustainable Tier 3 and Tier 4 projects that use less water (around 200,000 liters/day vs. 40-50M liters/day for low-tier), promoting water reclamation and efficient cooling for better environmental standards.
Why the Change?
Water Conservation: Tier 1 & 2 centers consume significantly more water, straining resources, especially in a water-sensitive area like Johor.
Sustainability Focus: Johor aims to attract greener data centers that align with global environmental benchmarks.
New Requirements:
Higher Tiers: Only Tier 3 and Tier 4 projects (which offer redundancy and higher uptime) are now encouraged.
Water Efficiency: New projects must incorporate reclaimed water for cooling and use efficient closed-loop systems, similar to those used in modern gaming PCs, notes Tom's Hardware.
Impact:
This policy shifts development towards more responsible data center growth, attracting major players and investment to sustainable tech hubs like Sedenak Tech Park (STeP) in Kulai, Johor.
