Yeah I mean he didn't grow up in the best environment. By all accounts he grew up in escapism, full of hope and dreams. Imagine feeling crushed in all those failed auditions and seeing his friend (Tony Leung) move forward while he was stuck hosting a kids show... and just when he finally able to taste success, he gets cornered by the triads and had to do the same movie roles over and over again.
