PETALING JAYA: Those travelling for work from Klang to Kuala Lumpur will have little to cheer, as the long‑anticipated Shah Alam LRT line (formerly LRT3) is now projected to be delayed to at least the second quarter of 2026.

According to industry sources, the primary cause of the delay lies in the final and most demanding stage of the project – system testing and commissioning

The line is currently undergoing a mandatory “fault-free run” as prescribed by the Land Public Transport Act 2010.

During this phase, the 22 trainsets, along with their wayside and supporting systems, must demonstrate the ability to integrate and operate continuously and reliably, as expected of a top-tier driverless train system using the Grade of Automation 4 (GoA 4) standard

Under this testing regime, the rolling stock, signalling, communications and electrification systems must all perform seamlessly together, not just in isolation, before the regulator, the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad), can certify the system as safe and fit for service.

Insiders say the trainsets have struggled to achieve and sustain the designated operating speed of 80-90kph, something which cannot be dismissed as a “minor issue”.

not really poor project management can be entirely to be blamed.

i would assume, [educated guess]

project lama. project was delayed due to stop work order when change of gov . and the cost of the project came into question. so new gov available to reduce the cost, (but manage to reduce the cost by reducing number of stations) .
anyhow, issue is, some of the equipment or sensors most probably was purchased at the begining of the project. so now, they want to do commissioning but its a rojak of equipment and sensors , some new , some old . on top of that. someone had made announcement publicly that system will be ready <insert date> .

date announced without consideration worst case scenario timeline.

It didn't say "end or beginning" of 2nd quarter 2026. Means can start as early as April, or latest by June (provided no more delays).

Suspect they want to ensure no hiccups like the Aerotrain issue, and that the "best' time to do is after the CNY-Raya holidays

Later postponed until end of 2026. Better just tell next year no need to give date. Trolling people is not a good sign.

Need order special replacement plus shipping by sea and installation. That already 3 mths window period. After that, do testing again. Around there lor time frame

It’s better to solve the on hands problems first before launch, better than launch first fix later attitude. Of course I’m not discounting the seeking accountability part for the delay.

Sounds very much like klia aero train debacle

Trains can’t run consistently at rated speed without failure/trip. If they open on Dec 31 no one will be wiser at first. But at the first breakdown will result in massive disruption not just to lrt3 but the whole network.

The risk too high for loke to push for Dec opening especially after all the flak about klia aerotrain

KLIA Aerotrain more or less it was the best compromise. Further delays to the service or teething problems.

Pestech was orginally revoked the contract as they had financial difficulties but in the end reinstated (not sure if got new JV partner) as no choice, retender gonna delay it further

This one after Tokong went thru the contractors back in 2018 with a hacksaw and considering they already have sunk unrecoverable costs (wink wink) this is probably one of the side effects

Testing should be done from A to Z and find out all the problem as a whole and fix it as a teamwork and deadline.

testing A to F, got problem, stop, goyang kaki and wait until part arrive or problem solving solutions
then test A to K, got problem, then stop and wait for solutions again
& continue doing this again & again

like that 2026 also cannot finish testing
when finished and start operation, the warranty period of the LRT train or other parts warranty already habis or start need replacement due to long time no use or under our extreme weather


I think this cost cutting is the cause too
