KUCHING (Dec 7): The Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) has finally set a timeline for its long-awaited Animal Village.
Speaking at the Christmas Charity Bazaar on Sunday, SSPCA president Datin Sri Dona Drury Wee said construction of the new facility is expected to begin in 2026, following confirmed funding from the Premier’s Office as well as public donations collected over the years.
“We are now renegotiating the contract and construction should take 20 months, so by the end of 2027 we should be in our new home,” she said.
Dona was previously reported as saying that the Animal Village would be built on a 1.2‑hectare site in Sungai Tapang, replacing its current shelter at Mile 6½ Penrissen Road.
She also highlighted several future collaborations with government agencies and other organisations.
“Together with the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak, Sarawak State Health Department, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), and local councils, our team has continued supporting vaccination efforts, community outreach, school education, and awareness programmes.
“Next year, these agencies will be working together with Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to do a dog census in Kuching, followed by an intensive vaccination programme for Kuching and Batu Kawa; working with World Veterinary Services and Mission Rabies,” she added.
In 2025 alone, SSPCA successfully neutered and vaccinated over 700 animals in Kuching and Bau, supported by donations and grants from Yayasan Hasanah and All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia for the Sustainable Development Goals (APPGM-SDG).
“Through our neutering programmes—especially in high-risk and underserved areas—we are reducing stray populations humanely and sustainably,” she said.
Also present at the event was Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
