Hi, I previously drove a Proton sedan and a Suzuki SUV, and I’m currently using a Mazda 3 as my daily driver.
Compared to the Proton, the driving experience feels much more refined, which naturally led me to develop an interest in the MX-5.
However, a friend of mine insists that the MX-5 is a “girl’s car” and also overpriced locally compared to overseas markets. He’s been trying to convince me to consider the Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ instead.
I haven’t driven any of these models yet, and price-wise, there isn’t a significant difference due to the age of the cars. Also, please don’t suggest more premium brands like Porsche, as they’re out of my budget.
I’d appreciate an expert perspective on the pros, cons, and maintenance considerations for the models in this poll.
Thanks in advance!

QUOTE(ktek @ Dec 7 2025, 12:36 PM) do u plan to mod -- jdm plenty choices. no mod -conti how bout 3 door hatchbacks I don’t have any interest in doing any mods at the moment. After researching further, I think I’ll stick with a JDM car for easier maintenance. A 3-door hatchback just doesn’t appeal to me For the MX-5 hardtop, are leaks or motor failures common even after repairs? Also, if I drive it with the roof up during the afternoon heat or in rainy weather, is a convertible really that inconvenient? This post has been edited by HolyValkyrie: Yesterday, 04:46 PM

oh i forget to ask. u still keeping masda3/ got other vehicles as daily use rite. i would suggest c coupe/ cabriolet or e variant (see price) as they have shared parts with normal sedan.
the jdm in boxer cant say "easy maintenance" as u imagined.
meanwhile mx5 quite sissy to majority friends
