A new beginning could be on the horizon for Proton, as during a presentation at the ongoing Proton Tech Showcase, Proton Vehicle Programme Executive Mr. Desmond John Pinto revealed that Geely could rebadge Proton AMA-based models during a Q&A session.
According to Mr. Pinto, the reason why Geely could be looking to engage Proton is because within Geely’s own portfolio, the company does not offer models smaller than the S70 / X50 that would be suitable for export markets. The company’s smallest model, the Geely Blue Balloon, is essentially a Wuling Mini EV rival, itself too small for most export markets.
So, for some markets, Geely could be rebadging Proton’s AMA-based models to be sold there, which could mark the first time a Proton model gets rebadged as a Geely. Bear in mind, since Geely came on-board in 2017, Proton only rebadged Geely-based models; not the other way around.
The foundation for all of these is Proton’s Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) – a revised and reengineered version of the Proton Saga’s platform.
As the “Modular” part of its name implies, the wheelbase can be stretched by up to 290 mm (current Saga has a wheelbase of 2,465 mm since the 2008 Saga BLM), which would indicate that the AMA platform can offer a wheelbase of up to 2,755 mm.
For context, a 2,755 mm-long wheelbase would put the AMA platform on par (at least in terms of wheelbase) with the soon-to-be-launched C-segment Proton eMas 7 PHEV.
Proton also hinted at three other AMA-based models: AMA02, AMA05, and AMA06. At the point of writing, we have no idea what these model codes signify, but given that SUVs are the in-thing currently, at least one of those model codes could indicate an SUV of some sorts.
The AMA platform will also be Proton’s entry for potentially more export markets. Both left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive models will be developed concurrently, hinting at the massive potential that Proton has with the AMA platform.
Furthermore, now that the CamPro powertrains are finally a thing of the past, the new i-GT powertrains from Horse Powertrain will bring Proton up to Euro 6 standards – crucial for markets where emissions are strict. Hybrid powertrains are also in the pipeline, which could be the secret sauce that Proton needs to achieve 330,000-unit sales by 2030.
