There is more to books than Hemingway or the old classics. Nowadays many books are made into popular mainstream movies or series like the LOTR, A Song of Ice and Fire, Dune, Harry Potter.

Someone who is well read, well, it is easier to find something to talk about.

edit: you can also recommend movies or shows if you think it might interest your significant other. or the other way around, I actually didn't promote the watchman movie to my waifu because i knew she would most likely not be interested.
