After the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895, Taiwan was ceded to Japan and subjected to 50 years of colonial rule. By the 1930s and 1940s, many Taiwan women were deceived, coerced, or forced into the Imperial Japanese Army's system of military sexual slavery, known as the "comfort women" system.

Key Facts:

- Over 2,000 Taiwan women were forced into military sexual slavery.
- Survivors reported extreme sexual violence, sexually transmitted diseases, forced abortions and being made to work as nurses, porters, or even human shields.
- After the war, many lived in isolation, poverty, chronic illness and infertility due to lifelong trauma.
- Since 1999, Taiwan survivors have filed lawsuits in Japan, bravely testifying despite reliving profound trauma — yet in 2005, Japan's Supreme Court dismissed the case, denying compensation and an official apology.
- By 2025, all known Taiwan survivors had passed away.

The comfort women system was not voluntary prostitution but a state-run, coercive program of sexual slavery across Japan's colonies and occupied territories. It is recognized as one of the 20th century's gravest human rights atrocities, leaving tens of thousands of women profoundly scarred.
