US President Donald Trump has directed the Secretary of Transportation to immediately approve the production of ultra-compact cars in the United States.
He made the announcement during a speech at the White House, which has since gone viral on social media.
In the video, Trump shared that his interest in these compact vehicles was sparked by his recent visit to Asia, including Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea.
Trump described the cars he saw during the visit as “very small and really cute,” and expressed surprise that such models are not allowed to be produced in the US.
If you go to Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, they have cars that are very small… very small and really cute,” he said.
You’re not allowed to build those cars in the US, and I’ve given the Secretary [of Transportation] the approval to start producing them immediately.”
According to Trump, the compact cars he observed are much cheaper and provide a practical option for people to own new vehicles.
He added that while Japanese brands such as Honda have successfully developed compact models, similar vehicles are not widely available in the US due to restrictions.
I believe American companies will do very well with these cars,” he said. “We’re going to approve them.”
Trump’s remarks have caught the attention of many Malaysians, who were quick to associate his description with the iconic Perodua Myvi, a small and local car known for its convenience in city driving.
