KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3 — The deep-sea search for the missing wreckage of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is set to resume in the Southern Indian Ocean on December 30, the Ministry of Transport said today.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transport said Ocean Infinity has confirmed it will recommence seabed search operations for a total of 55 days, conducted intermittently.

The search will focus on areas assessed to have the highest probability of locating the aircraft, in line with the service agreement signed between the Government of Malaysia and Ocean Infinity on March 25, 2025.

“The latest development underscores the Government of Malaysia’s commitment to providing closure to the families affected by this tragedy,” the ministry said.

Flight MH370, carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members, vanished on March 8, 2014, after departing from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) en route to Beijing.

Despite the largest search effort in aviation history, which covered over 46,000 square miles of the southern Indian Ocean, only a few fragments of the aircraft have been found, scattered on beaches thousands of miles apart.

What Malaysia Must Get Right in the New MH370 Search
December 8, 2025

It’s one of the world’s great unresolved aviation mysteries. On March 8, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic control less than an hour after takeoff. It was never seen again.

More than 11 years later, the search for the aircraft will begin again this month. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has an opportunity to correct what previous administrations bungled. His government cannot guarantee the plane will be found, but it can offer what his predecessors didn’t: transparency.

Marine exploration company Ocean Infinity will resume looking on Dec. 30, after another search was halted earlier this year because of seasonal weather issues. This attempt will give the firm 55 days to scour a 15,000-square-kilometer (5,791 square-miles) area in the southern Indian Ocean, assessed to have the highest probability of locating the aircraft. The mission will be conducted on a “no find, no fee” basis, with Transport Minister Anthony Loke previously saying the company would be paid $70 million if something is found.

But commitment will matter only if it’s matched by competence. Malaysia has made big promises before. The Najib Razak government’s handling of MH370 in the early months was widely criticized for confusion and opacity. An official 2018 safety investigation report concluded the plane was probably steered off course deliberately and flown to the southern Indian Ocean, but stopped short of apportioning blame.

That’s left the families of the 239 people on board with years of grief and unanswered questions. A majority of the passengers on the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing were Chinese. Others included Malaysians, Indonesians and Australians, as well as Indian, American, Dutch and French nationals.

Anwar is inheriting this legacy, and at a difficult time for his administration — a former senior aide has been detained and charged over alleged bribes linked to mining licenses. It’s an uncomfortable backdrop for a leader who came to power on an anti-graft platform, and his credibility could be further damaged if this search is mismanaged.

There are several things Malaysia must get right this time round, starting with communicating clearly — in contrast to the way the government managed the initial MH370 investigations. The haphazard nature of announcements this year, from contract talks to weather delays, risks opening old wounds. Silence from authorities, even for a few weeks, brings back memories of 2014, which was marked by confusion around official statements. Families deserve timely updates, whether wreckage is found or not.

There are reasons to be cautiously optimistic. Ocean Infinity says it has improved its technology since 2018, working with a far more mature suite of ocean-mapping tools. These include largely uncrewed surface vessels coordinating autonomous underwater vehicles, which will hover just above the seabed, enabling it to map terrain down to a depth of nearly 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) and search wider areas with sharper images.

All of this is reassuring, but neither Malaysia nor the firm should allow further delays. A loss of momentum would undermine confidence, feeding conspiracy theories that Kuala Lumpur will once again drag its feet over the investigation.

Malaysia Airlines has faced an uphill climb to restore its reputation since the disappearance of MH370, compounded by the downing of MH17 over Ukraine that same year. A UN aviation council ruled Russia was responsible for the tragedy that killed all 298 passengers and crew. Since then, the carrier has been privatized and is now owned by the nation’s sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd.

Anwar’s administration should commit to releasing search data, analysis, and updates in real time. This would strengthen confidence and potentially contribute to global aviation safety. Experts learn from each other’s findings, and giving investigators access to this data would allow them to improve their models for deep-sea crash dynamics.

For the families, it could go some way to resolving their grief. A well-managed search could go a long way toward showing the world that Malaysia can keep the promises it has made.

IATA Welcomes Resumption Of MH370 Search, Says It Is Critical To Find Truth
10/12/2025 08:57 AM
From Kisho Kumari Sucedaram

GENEVA, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has welcomed efforts to resume the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 later this month, saying the global aviation community remains determined to uncover the truth behind the aircraft’s disappearance.

IATA director-general Willie Walsh said determining the cause of the Boeing 777’s disappearance remains critical for global aviation safety, adding that any credible new data or technology that could aid the search should be utilised.

He said this when asked about US-based seabed exploration firm Ocean Infinity, which is set to resume the search for the aircraft that vanished on March 8, 2014, with 239 passengers and crew on board.

“It is essential that we make whatever effort we can to discover the aircraft and to understand what actually happened,” he told Bernama at IATA’s Global Media Briefing at its headquarters here on Tuesday.

The disappearance of MH370, which was on a routine commercial flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Beijing, remains one of aviation’s greatest mysteries.

Military radar later tracked the aircraft turning back across Peninsular Malaysia and towards the Andaman Sea before it disappeared from all surveillance, according to reports.

Walsh said the Geneva-based IATA, which represents airlines and sets global standards for safety, security, efficiency and sustainability, supports any renewed attempts by governments or technical teams to locate the missing Boeing 777.

Its final resting place has yet to be found.

“Everybody wants to see that aircraft found and everybody wants to be able to understand what actually happened,” he said.

Walsh said the association would welcome any effort that contributes to advancing the investigation, noting that the loss of MH370 continues to weigh heavily on families, the industry and the wider public.

“I am sure all of the families involved will welcome the resumption of the search for the aircraft, as everybody in the industry will, because we all want to know what happened,” he said.

Earlier this month, on December 3, Malaysia’s Transport Ministry announced that the deep-sea search for MH370 will resume on 30 December this year.

Ocean Infinity has confirmed to the Malaysian government that it will recommence seabed search operations for a total of 55 days, to be carried out intermittently.

Despite the largest and most expensive underwater search in aviation history, involving Australia, Malaysia and China, the wreckage was never found.

The original search covered 120,000 square kilometres of the southern Indian Ocean and was suspended in 2017 after two years.

Only scattered debris confirmed to be from MH370 has ever been recovered, found on islands in the western Indian Ocean after drifting on prevailing currents.

A search attempt earlier this year began in March but was suspended shortly afterwards due to poor weather.

According to news reports, the company expressed confidence that improved robotics and mapping technology, along with lessons from the earlier mission, give the new effort a stronger chance of success.

Ocean Infinity said its current fleet of robotic survey vessels is carbon neutral and significantly more efficient than traditional deep-sea platforms.

What sort of closure could finding the plane bring the families? Already found parts of the plane.

They are confirmed dead, bodies not recoverable.
