i kena similar situation

1) train counter attendant was rude when my partner accidentally cross the ticket booth when the icoca tag was invalid.. he shouted HEY COME HERE.. then nagged in japanese.. we just sumimasen sumimasen till he invalidate the card tag

2) family mart staff. was ordering ice latte took the cup from freezer n go to counter. he spoke in japanese which i dont und wtf.. i just say ice latte.. then he nag dunno wat wat yada yada shit. i raised my voice again ICE LATTE.. paid>make my coffee>ciao. still can here him nagging while waiting for my latte to be done.

3) pokemon card shop at american street. no ppl at the counter. called the lips pearcing thin japanese lady with emo style to come open glass door to choose my card.. didnt bother to respond and cont playing her phone.she was attending to another japanese customer before that. i just ciao

4) some local makan place at umeda. 50s uncle and aunty manning the shop.. went in to request seat for 2.. aunty was so good layaning us and plan to place us in a seating. suddenly the uncle be like “DA ME! DA ME!” aunty face bersalah d n apologize to us.. i guess the uncle duwan serve gaijin kot..so ciao find other place
but again these are like 20% bad experience only out of my overall trip. there are many more friendly, polite and helpful japanese from my encounters.. i kinda understand some of their reaction prolly kena from rude tourists before.. so i just dont mine and avoid confrontation as much as i can

these negative thing wont stop me from revisiting bcs i love  travelling there!

i encountered similar experience during osaka too, just walking past a restaurant out of nowhere 2 waiters outside were asking if im chinese dog

putting that experience aside i feel like macam overrated nothing much hoohaa like you see on internet and people sharing their reels..but then i only visited the most common 3 cities during that trip. Might give another try to Hokkaido in future. Food also so so its mostly salty very 1 dimensional taste or i went to wrong restaurants.

1) just alighted the train at a station and preparing to go to the hotel with my luggage, then saw a drunkard shouting "i will kill you" (in japanese, multiple times) at the platform, i just walked past and go to the nearest elevator, and then he took the same elevator with me, dllm. Luckily nothing happen, and he became normal again when see a station police.

2) bought something at a shop, then i heard the cashier asked me if i have membership card, I didn't understand, so i asked him in detail in japanese (i also know abit of japanese). He heard my accent does not sound japanese, he just raised his hand, and not answered any of my question, oh well, i just leave the shop then.

3) I asked for a steam bun at a convenient store (in japanese), the cashier ignored me totally.

Just a cold society, never feel like going there again.
