Japan has denied muslim requests for cemeteries affirming cremation is the tradition, they have to go back to their own countries if they want burials.

Japan has rejected demands for new Muslim cemeteries, prioritizing its cremation practices and land conservation efforts over accommodations for the nation's small Islamic community.

House of Councillors member Mizuho Umemura, representing the conservative Sanseito party, denied the request saying, "cremation is the norm" telling muslims to send the remains back to their home countries for burial.

The country maintains about 10 burial sites nationwide—none in key regions like Tohoku or Kyushu—because of concerns over groundwater contamination and scarce arable land.

She took the moment to talk about a nationwide ban on burials altogether, arguing that the ban would protect agricultural water sources.

For Muslims, who number around 350,000, cremation violates Islamic tenets prohibiting the destruction of the body before resurrection.

Umemura said the country is happy to welcome skilled workers but not at the expense of their core values, and culture.
