Japanese pop singer Hamasaki Ayumi's scheduled concert in Shanghai has been canceled amid growing reaction from China against a remark by Japan's prime minister.
Takaichi Sanae made the remark at a Diet session this month concerning a possible Taiwan emergency.
On Friday afternoon, the concert organizer announced the cancelation of the event that was slated for Saturday, citing force majeure as the reason.
Hamasaki said in a social media post that she was suddenly asked to cancel the event on Friday morning. She said that she still cannot believe it and does not know the words to express how she feels. She asked for understanding for only being able to say this much at the moment.
Concerts and entertainment events by Japanese artists and performers have been canceled or postponed in China since Takaichi's remark drew reaction from Beijing.
Hamasaki's Asia tour started this year in Hong Kong.
Following the massive blaze at a high-rise residential complex there, she said in a social media post, "Our prayers go to Hong Kong."
