China housewife spends S$123,000 of husband's life savings on gifts for male live-streamer

A man in Henan, China was shocked to find that his wife had reportedly spent 1.16 million yuan (S$213,296) of their life savings in eight years of marriage.

About half of the sum (S$123,196) was spent on gifts to a male live-streamer, the man said, adding that he felt "betrayed", according to Chinese media.

The man, surnamed Liu, who is from Xingyang city in Zhengzhou, Henan, said in an interview that after their marriage in 2017, his wife had stopped work and stayed at home to care for their child.

To provide her with a sense of security, Liu said that apart from his daily spending, the rest of his income was entrusted to his wife for safekeeping.

Over eight years, Liu had deposited approximately 1.16 million yuan (S$213,296) in a fixed deposit account under his wife's name, but now, the account only has 30 cents (about S$0.05) left.

"670,000 yuan (S$123,196) of the sum was spent on a male live-streamer, and she claims she doesn't know where the rest went," said Liu, as quoted by Jimu News.

In addition, Liu said his wife took up 80,000 yuan (S$14,710) in online loans.

Under questioning by Liu on the matter, Liu's wife admitted to reporters that she was "hooked".

She said that she had wanted to help the male live-streamer get votes and win challenges with other live-streamers, but added that she never met him in person.

Liu argued that the amount his wife spent on gifts is part of their matrimonial assets, and wants to recover it before he will consider divorce, Red Star News reported.

"All these years, I've had to suffer at work, but at home she was stabbing me in the back. Marriage really made me lose trust [in people]. The love between us is already dead, but I still have old folks and our child to consider," said Liu.
