This is my first time seeing such a limit. You can only keep your item below the seat. You have to pay to keep your bag in overhead stowage compartment.

Fly ultralight (not in this package) but didn't bring anything except my ipad to Perth. Bought some clothes in Target and spend few days there.

Yes - very easy. I did a one month trip with 34L Osprey carry on that weighed less than 8kg. Of course different proposition if you are going to need nice clothes jewelry, cosmetics , electronics - but for most incidentals, even basic clothing, they can be bought cheap on arrival , everywhere so why pay the airline to transport them for you..
