Japan is consistently ranked as the most trusted partner by ASEAN countries, a position confirmed by multiple years of the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute's State of Southeast Asia survey, with trust levels at 66.8% in 2025. This trust is largely attributed to long-term economic investment, commitment to regional stability, and adherence to international law, particularly in contrast to the actions of other powers. The strong partnership is also fueled by decades of cooperation, including significant contributions to development and a growing role in regional security.

What does it mean for a country to be “trusted”? ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute defines a “trusted
partner” as a country that would “do the right thing in contributing to global peace, security,
prosperity, and governance”.6
In essence, trust goes beyond formal diplomacy or transactional
cooperation – it is about whether a country can act responsibly for the greater good, not merely for
its own interests. In contrast, distrust emerges when a country is seen as self-serving, unpredictable,
or threatening to the sovereignty and stability of other countries.

It's not about being bff. You do not want a single superpower ONLY in these regions. Southeast Asia benefits from a balance of power among multiple superpowers. If any Superpower goes "rogue" at least there are others to pull it back.

You buy shares also have to diversify and not put all your eggs in 1 basket.

Many forget China claim of South China Sea as theirs.

Yes. If they think that what japan did during ww2 is horrible, imagine the militarization of China now. They are a nuclear power. If China decides to follow the footsteps of past japan, i can't imagine the impact. The South China Sea is a wakeup call. Which countries in SEA dare to voice out against China?
