ive done taught degrees (under) all my life and never done anything research. i am wondering how research postgrad is like... having come through the school system the only thing i know is how to study, learn , then spit it out during exam... never done research before.

1) who decides what topic do you want to research? you or your lecturer?
2) can detail how is it like?
3) is research degree more valuable than taught degree?

Whats the purpose of you doing yr Masters Degree ? If u want to be in the academia world, then do think about doing yr Masters Degree by research...

I did mine more than 20 yrs back...

U have to be very disciplined, or else u will lag behind..also yr supervising lecturer must also have time for you...sometimes they go back for their vacation for months and u will be a in limbo...

It can be quite frustrating especially when ur stuck at a problem, and it can take months and months of hard work before you can untangled them..I am glad I didnt continue my PHD, its not my cup of tea..

I have always felt doing postgraduate (research), most of the time you get minimal support from your supervisor, especially you're in a lab (Nobel price winner) that runs like a cooperate. You don't even get to see him personally.

Good thing about doing research is freedom to do whatever idea we have. As you said, not everyone is driven by curiosity. Those with research mind are mostly not into money. They are more into satisfying their ideas and knowledge.

Yr supervisor will of coz be bz, coz he or she will be supervising a lot of other students lar...some even get posted overseas for a few months...back in my days, we dont use Teams or Skype or whatosever ...I was using Hotmail back then..LOL...

Nowadays, they are more options to communicate, so even if u dont see him in person, u can talk to him in so many ways...

Hence vital for you to pick the right supervisor...
