DAP MP demands FAM reveal 'technical errors' as taxpayers to foot fines
DAP national legal bureau chairperson Ramkarpal Singh urged the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to reveal the technical error which led to fines by the International Federation of Association Football (Fifa).
He said this is because the national football team is funded by taxpayers, and that public money will be used to pay Fifa’s fine of 350,000 Swiss francs (RM1.9 million) on FAM and 2,000 Swiss francs (RM10,500) on each “heritage” player.

The aforementioned players have been further sanctioned with a 12-month suspension from all football-related activities, effective from the date of notification of the decision.

Motion to debate FIFA findings on Harimau Malaya heritage players filed

KUALA LUMPUR: A government backbencher has filed a notice of motion with the Dewan Rakyat Speaker's Office to discuss FIFA's findings of inconsistencies in the documents of seven Harimau Malaya heritage players.
Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) said the matter is of public importance which requires urgent attention.
"This matter raises serious questions about the transparency of national sports governance, the naturalisation process for athletes, and the level of oversight concerning official national documents.
"There may also be breaches of laws relating to the falsification of official documents, which require a comprehensive investigation and immediate action by the authorities," he said.
He also said the Lower House must debate to inform the public of the administrative, disciplinary, and legal actions that will be taken against the Football Association of Malaysia and any individuals involved.
"Parliament should also direct a comprehensive audit of all ongoing athlete naturalisation cases to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations."
FIFA has released the full reasoning behind the disciplinary action taken against FAM and seven Harimau Malaya heritage players, confirming that inconsistencies were found in the original documents submitted during the players' registration process.
In its official report titled "Notification of the Grounds of the Decision" dated Oct 6, 2025, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee said the sanctions were imposed for violations under Article 22 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, involving the falsification and alteration of official documents.
The investigation revealed that several supporting documents submitted by FAM, including birth certificates of the players' grandparents, contained details that did not match the original records in the players' actual countries of birth.
Checks found that the individuals listed as the grandparents of the seven players were not born in Malaysia, contradicting what was stated in the documents provided to FIFA.
The report also stated that the National Registration Department (NRD) had issued copies of the documents based on secondary information submitted to them, rather than from original birth records.
This is despite FAM and the players maintained that all documents were obtained through legal channels, FIFA emphasised the principle of strict liability — meaning that even in the absence of intent to deceive, failure to verify the authenticity of documents still amounts to a disciplinary offence.
The seven players had represented Malaysia in official international matches, including the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Vietnam on June 10, where two of them scored.
Following the findings, FIFA fined FAM 350,000 Swiss francs (about RM1.8 million), while each player was fined 2,000 Swiss francs and handed a 12-month suspension from all international football activities.
FAM have been given 30 days to pay the fine and three days to submit a notice of appeal to FIFA's Appeals Committee.

Ini yang masuk berita, yang tak masuk we also dunno. Better be chicken boleh makan freely than makan nasi kari.
actually there are a few separate issues here that many people seems to have mixed up
1) granting of citizenship to the foreign players.
the HM has the discretion to give citizenship to anyone, so long as they meet certain criteria.
for instance, if Elon Musk suddenly wants to become a Malaysian citizen and promise to invest RM5b, he will get citizenship almost immediately after the documents are submitted.
2) representing Malaysia under heritage route
now FIFA does not want players offering their services to play for countries in exchanges for citizenship and places extra criteria such as length of stay and this heritage route.
the issue is that they are questions as to whether these players actually qualify under the heritage route as fifa claims to have their grandparents birth record from foreign country but FAM claims the grandparents are born in Malaysia in order to qualify for the heritage route.
so the real issue is not whether they qualified to be Malaysia citizens but where their grandparents are actually born in right
i don't think where they were born or their grandparents were born was a consideration for citizenship
Yes, but the current scandal is surrounding FIFA's decision, so we're mostly talking about point 2 (that ties back to 1, but focus is still 2). Locally authorities can argue whatever power they have for point 1, if it doesn't address Fifa's ruling the scandal is still there.
Speaker rejects MP’s motion to debate Fifa sanctions
Johari Abdul says the issue was explained by the home minister yesterday.
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul said in his letter to Kampar MP Chong Zhemin that his rejection of the latter’s notice of motion was in accordance with Standing Order 18(7)(b).
PETALING JAYA: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul has rejected a notice of motion filed by Kampar MP Chong Zhemin to debate Fifa’s findings, disclosed in its judgment disputing the Malaysian heritage of seven footballers in the Harimau Malaya national squad.
In a letter to the MP sighted by FMT, Johari said home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had explained the issue during Question Time yesterday.
“Therefore, I am rejecting Yang Berhormat’s motion to the chamber, in accordance with Standing Order 18(7)(b),” he said.
According to Standing Order 18(7)(b), a speaker may refuse to allow any motion submitted to him if he is satisfied that the matter raised has been debated in the current session and that the relevant minister has provided clarification.
Saifuddin said that the naturalisation of the footballers whom Fifa had sanctioned was done strictly by the book based on three criteria under Article 19 of the Federal Constitution: good character, adequate knowledge of Bahasa Melayu, and residence in Malaysia for the required periods and the intention to do so permanently.
He also said that 23 footballers, including the seven sanctioned players, had been naturalised as Malaysian citizens throughout his tenure as home minister.
Chong issued the notice of motion on Fifa’s findings three days ago, saying they raised serious concerns regarding transparency in national sports governance, the athlete naturalisation process, and the oversight of official national documents.
The players involved are Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal and Hector Hevel.
Fifa said its probe had found falsified documents claiming that the players’ grandparents were Malaysian, when records showed they were born in Spain, Argentina, Brazil and the Netherlands.
The Football Association of Malaysia meanwhile has reiterated its decision to appeal Fifa’s sanctions, saying the international football organisation provided no evidence to support its claims.
