The direct flights, operated by Jiangxi Air, run twice a week, on Mondays and Saturdays. It is not only the first direct flight to be launched between Jiangxi and Malaysia since the visa waiver policy was adopted, but also the airline's only direct route from the inland province to Southeast Asia.

The inaugural flight was 90 per cent full, said Ding Chunling, Jiangxi Air's general manager of marketing and sales, something that he said reflects the deepening ties between China and Malaysia.

Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani, managing director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, described the new route as a key strategic move to improve aviation ties between Malaysia and China.

Direct access to emerging inland markets in China will create more trade, investment and business opportunities for Malaysia, he said, and solidify Kuala Lumpur's position as a major aviation hub in Southeast Asia, opening new avenues for tourism and economic and cultural exchanges.

The new link greatly reduces travel time between Southeast Asia and Jiangxi — from eight to nine hours with transfers down to just over four hours.

The flights are forecast to bring in more than 15,000 tourists to Nanchang from Southeast Asia each year.

In addition to Nanchang, other Chinese cities, including Qingdao in Shandong province and Haikou in Hainan province, have begun direct flights to Kuala Lumpur since the mutual visa exemption took effect in July.

Last year several cities, including Wuhan in Hubei province, Nanjing in Jiangsu, Kunming in Yunnan and Yantai in Shandong, also introduced direct flights to Kuala Lumpur.
