I'm helping my father submit his insurance claim for critical illness after he suffered from stroke last Dec'24. For the claim, a medical report from doctor (Attending Physician Statement) is needed. I was told by the hospital (Private hospital in Penang) that the report can only be completed in 2-3 months time, as this doctor who attended my dad is a busy doctor.

I wondering if anyone have experience with critical illness insurance claim and how long does yours take? Is it the norm for doctor to take such a long time to prepare a report?

1. You need to ask the insurance exactly what is needed. Eg, for AIA it is their form which the doctor needs to fill up plus proof. Most of the time the proof or supporting documents should be available when they discharge your father.
2. Did you apply through formal channel? If so typically it takes more time. If it is like the above example to fill up the form, you can try to make appointment with the doctor and ask him to fill up on the spot. Normally the nurse will do it and he will just sign off. Then again this depends on the doctor, you have to pay of course for the doctor appointment plus any other hospital related costs.

Good luck to your father and your claim. My advice is to contact your insurance agent or be more dilligent to read the fine prints. ie exactly what is needed from the doctor to ensure the claim is successful. You don't want a situation where after you pay the money and spent the time to get the "report" only for the insurance company to reject base on whatever excuse or reasons they can find.

Thanks for your helpful reply. Yes, I did reach out to our agent and was told to get the Attending Physician Statement from the doctor. Apparently this doctor is one of the few stroke doctor in Penang so it's normal to wait 2-3 months to get a report from him, based on what the hospital told me. Maybe I will try your suggestion to book an appointment with the doctor instead.

Counter staff normally gip standard answers ... 2-3 months.U can refer to the Dr again when your dad do follow up consultation.

Generally, better not say shorter duration just in case he is really a busy person.

i think yes, insurance claim tend to take very long time because behind the scene got some investigator, Insurance Claim Assessor , math guy who calculate your claim, and some higher up to approve. The respond tend to be slow, i remember my dengue claim from insurance took months.

TLDR here is u are at their mercy, u need to keep follow up a lot.

Critical Illness tend to require more detailed report due to the payout will depend on the severity. Stroke got many levels also so the insurer will require a detailed report.

So I believe the doctor will have to write quite a detailed report to justify the level of severity that needs to be given.

That being said, constant follow up is better. Work your agent to chase the hospital for the report.

If still no layan u go up to local authority
