Marriage is just like any partnership
If you don't offer the same value as other party desired, you would be resented as well
there's no exactly unconditional love, the only unconditional love is just within yourself. Even parental love they have a set of wishes and requirements and hence it becomes a passive attack (often times)

there's a subtly when it comes to self love
when you self love too much, it becomes narcissistic vibe
and selfishness will only lead to emotional blockage or suffering
real love comes from recognize oneself is already good enough to contribute to people or society in many ways

Alfred Adler was good at mentioning this in his psychoanalysis
