Hello Folks! I have recently accepted a job offer in Singapore and will be heading over soon. I have a draft plan regarding relocating there and setting myself up before commencing work.

1. Take a direct bus from MY to SG, e.g. Bus from TBS to a location in SG closest to budget hotel (within work location).
2. Get a Grab or Taxi to the budget hotel due to luggage constraints, staying for 1 night or 2.
3. View rental properties that were shortlisted with appointments made with agents prior to leaving MY. Securing a rental property should be priority with rentals near to work location at a maximum rent of 900 SGD or below.
4. Acquire SG number with affordable telco plans, e.g. Simba. Current MY Hotlink number will be on a roaming plan for data use in Singapore (1 month validity) and then be retained with 365 plan.
5. Open a SG bank account for salary purposes, and then having WISE as transfer between MY and SG.
6. Setting up local SG apps and Transport card, e.g. SGQR and EZ-Link.
7. Perform medical checkup at approved clinics for prerequisite to EP being issued.
8. Wander around SG, particularly living/work location to familiarise with the area, e.g. malls, hawkers, etc.
9. Start work.

I'm sure there are Malaysians here that have gone through this process, any advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated, whether it is relocation or living notworthy.gif

Rental sgd 900 is doable but a little restrictive. Agent in sg are pretty professional

For phone I suggest just get the umobile u68 plan.

Also for rental there are 2 types one is co living the other is living with owner. Really depends what you want.
*
Hey there! Thanks for the advice!

The rental price stated was my observation for single room (without roommates) in HDB/Condo, co-living or with owner, near my work area (Payar Lebar). Propertyguru will be the best option I suppose?

Is there a reason you suggest that mobile plan? It see it being useful if I'm not using my SG telco much, with Hotlink 365 it's RM30 to retain my number for a year, albeit without any data plan with it.

1. Take a direct bus from MY to SG, e.g. Bus from TBS to a location in SG closest to budget hotel (within work location).
Book your bus ticket via Easybook.com. Get a ticket for a bus that stops at "The Plaza" which is literally downtown where all/most budget hotels are. Eltabina bus is a good example, and very reliable (never late, clean, reasonably priced).

2. Get a Grab or Taxi to the budget hotel due to luggage constraints, staying for 1 night or 2.
Can check the price between Grab or taxi if you are cost conscious. "CDG zig" app is a good place to start. But short distance, not much difference in price la...

3. View rental properties that were shortlisted with appointments made with agents prior to leaving MY. Securing a rental property should be priority with rentals near to work location at a maximum rent of 900 SGD or below.
Depends on where is your workplace. If CBD area, rental starts at a few thousand onwards (mostly for lazy angmo). Malaysians will start further and take train.

4. Acquire SG number with affordable telco plans, e.g. Simba. Current MY Hotlink number will be on a roaming plan for data use in Singapore (1 month validity) and then be retained with 365 plan.
For a start, Simba is cheapest, but not the best in coverage. Usable never the least. $10 per month - what is there to complaint? Number can be easily ported to other telcos. You can also ask to get special numbers. Can start from $50 - 4-figures, depending on how special the number.

5. Open a SG bank account for salary purposes, and then having WISE as transfer between MY and SG.
This I think you need a letter from HR. And you need your WP/SP/EP NIRC.

6. Setting up local SG apps and Transport card, e.g. SGQR and EZ-Link.
For now, can just use your Visa card. Transport cards like EZ-link may offer some discounts, but I don't bother. I tap using my Visa on my Apple watch for convenience.

7. Perform medical checkup at approved clinics for prerequisite to EP being issued.
Best make appointment. SG healthcare not friendly to walk-ins.

8. Wander around SG, particularly living/work location to familiarise with the area, e.g. malls, hawkers, etc.
Google map is your friend.

9. Start work.
Ganbatte neh...
And welcome to SG.
*
Hey! Thanks for your advice! Some extra questions:

3. My workplace is Payar Lebar, seems to have some options around the area or other close MRT stations, e.g. Aljunied, Eunos, etc. It is not CBD, so probably prices aren't that extreme?

4. Is there some other telco plan you recommend for balanced coverage/cost?

5. There shouldn't be any difference between bank options I presume? Probably their local banks like UOB/DBS/OCBC.

6. Is that a Visa from a MY bank, or you have a credit card from a SG bank?

No. Use Carousell.sg if you want to deal direct with laondlord/owner. Propertyguru are usually via agents.
*
Oh Yes! Carousell! Didn't realise they did rentals as well, options seem more affordable too?

Thanks for the tip biggrin.gif

you can try property guru... while lawerenceha suggested carousel but some times you might not get the location you want.

I have a company sg number which I rarely used. in fact I use U68 more often lol. U68 is 500gb shared with singapore data and free incoming call. but I suppose if you die die want a sg number I think My Republic is ok. they have SGD10, its good enough.

for bank just go with DBS you can't go wrong. you can apply online (forget about go to the branches its always super full). but you will need your employment letter and proof of residence .

try to get somewhere walking distance from MRT. also most mall have this Food Junction Food court, get their loyalty card, you get 10% discount.

also bear in mind, SG can be a boring place if you dont have other activities. try to find your circle of "friends". It offer a lot of opportunity. My Malaysian colleagues all go concert. like 5-6 concerts a year.

anyway all the best to you. Payar Lebar is an ok place la....
*
QUOTE(lawrencesha @ Jul 27 2025, 08:45 PM)
Walau. So true. Really need circle of friends. But in SG, they are so hard to come by. Busy with work la. Busy with family la. I'm always alone and damn bored!
*
Thanks for more tips!

Ah yes, technically I would be alone there as well. Hobby/interest groups hard to come by?

QUOTE(knwong @ Jul 27 2025, 09:17 PM)
Work as what? How much salary?

Put up at friends and family place in SG is better if you know anyone
*
Client Management in a Travel Tech company. I won't disclose the salary but it is a bit of a cut compared to my MY salary, due to jumping from an absolutely different industry (IT > Environment > Travel). Opportunity presented itself and I find this industry fascinating, since I'm still young (almost 30) with no dependants, I just decided to go for it.

Don't know anyone here unfortunately. I'll have to look around.

CIMB SG has the best FOREX rate

You need to have CIMB SG and CIMB Msia account.

Oh? Even better than WISE?

My current plan is:

Salary SG Account using DBS, then use WISE to transfer to Maybank MY Account.

I'll just say number to number value is lower, but after currency conversion is still more than double of my previous MYR pay.

For renting can consider McPherson area, rental can be quite cheap around there. I have a friend renting at 600 per month.

Bank, either OCBC or UOB with the monthly interest from GIRO.

Sg is small almost every mrt station has a mall or a hawker next to it
*
Is your friend renting a single room for 600 SGD? Aircon inclusive?

Yeah its probably between these three banks OCBC/UOB/DBS since they are mostly the same from what I gather.

Do they offer the salary following this age table? Look under "EP qualifying salary (Stage 1)"

It is below actually, I also realised after some digging that there are A LOT of Malaysians on EP that are below the supposed threshold lol.

zym for $10 a month and some free asean roaming is pretty worth
*
Which means my current MY cards will work but will probably cost more due to conversion rate. Will probably just get an EZ-Link or something. Oh unless you are using SG cards?

Thanks, will look at Zym as well.

Paya Lebar very happening. Our back office operation is at SingPost/PLQ.. be prepared to spend more on makan unless u buy chap fan from MRT as most, if not all, are foodcourt, F&B outlets etc.
$600 is cheap if it's per room/per pax.. my family 3-bedder in west was rented at $2.8K (6-pax capacity). Electricity ownself pay. That also cause whole unit rented out as leceh to find 6 separate tenants.
*
I always thought hawker is the same as food court no? Unless food court is like a more atas version of hawker lol. I was researching and a meal can be had for 3-4 SGD in most hawker places.

Yeah, rental is definitely the one thing that is pricey in SG. Payar Lebar and surrounding MRT areas (Aljunied, Eunos, etc.) seems to be still okay-ish in rental (single room below 1000 SGD) since it is not CBD area from what I gather.

QUOTE(Lescotesco @ Jul 28 2025, 03:27 PM)
CIMB rate is better, but u need cimb my and cimb sg for it work. the good thing is u can open both online without going to any branch.
i never withdraw cash in sg for a year already i think. most accept paynow, paywave but some old hawker still prefer cash only la.
mine is 2.5k for 1 bedroom (another room is locked so we got the whole unit with 1 bedroom only) in marrymount, near to bishan.

it is expensive but the good thing is we can run around naked in the house haha.
*
When I did online comparison I thought WISE was better actually? The live conversion seems to favour WISE more than CIMB, unless I'm missing what you are seeing?

Paynow is something like our DuitNow system correct? Is there a TnG equivalent there? Is it GrabPay or DBS Paylah?

If the other room is locked means practically the whole house is yours, no need to share bathroom haha.

Some aircon foodcourt can be pricier, especially if you compare chap fan. A tip would be to sign up for Link or Trust card, then download Fairprice app. You enjoy 10% for all Kopitiam purchases when you pay via app. Get link points and freebies too.
*
I'm assuming kopitiam is referring to all food courts and hawkers? Also, the Trust Link card you are referring to is this right: Link

10% sounds amazing to be honest, but does it have to be the combo of the Trust Link card and Fairprice app? Or another credit card will do the same?

QUOTE(gnc88 @ Jul 29 2025, 10:32 AM)
The Trust Cashback Credit Card’s rebates is good  if you hit threshold or travel overseas a lot. You can get up to 15% cashback on stuff like dining or shopping (you pick one each quarter), capped at S$250, but you need to spend S$500–S$2,000 a month to hit 5–15%. Everything else gets 1.5% cashback, dropping to 1% in 2025. So I always target to spend $2K and then switch to OCBC 365. That being said, there are other better cashback cards if you don't hit $2K/mth.

[attachmentid=11516522]
*
My monthly spending excluding rent may be below 500 SGD. My case probably better to get those other cashback cards that will come with free gifts during sign up I think?

QUOTE(Lescotesco @ Jul 29 2025, 10:44 AM)
need to compare during working hr. non working hr cimb rate is very low and wise might have charges that is not shown if u didnt login.

yeah paynow work like duitnow. grabpay and paylah is not so commonly use and they will not work with paynow.

another payment type is shopback.

nowadays i just bring my phone only, mrt bus can use paywave (google, apple , samsung pay all are accepted) and paynow & paywave for others.

ur ID (singpass) is in ur phone also.
*
Oh Grabpay and Paylah not widely used? Then I suppose its more common for PayNow using banking apps?

The other you mention Paywave is through CC wave or Google/Apple/Samsung Pay then.

Shopback I have not used in ages man, it is still around haha?

QUOTE(xMusashii @ Jul 29 2025, 03:52 PM)
Speaking of 'Kopitiam' hawker center, download NTUC Fairprice, and add your card in. Using the NTUC Fairprice App for payment gives you 10% discount. Wish I knew this earlier.
*
Yes, this seems to be an amazing tip being shared here.

QUOTE(Lescotesco @ Jul 29 2025, 04:02 PM)
Bro apply from singsaver or moneysmart to see which welcome gift u prefer. and their welcome gift is awesome.

So far i have 2 switch from citibank (me and my wife)
Ipad9 - OCBC
700 shopee voucher - SC
dyson dry&wet vacuum and dyson hairdyer - hsbc
500 capitaland voucher - posb
after a year i plan to cancel them and reapply to get for a welcome gift next year after 12month cooling off period.
i see, no wonder cause i heard my ex colleague says she got a full withdrawal from a chq.
*
I should look at Singsaver and Moneysmart for ideas as well, those gifts are worth quite a bit. Wouldn't you get flagged if you cancel often and reapply just to get gifts?

No need susah susah la.
Go for Uob One Account. Let your payroll know, you want uob for salary. You can check out their tiered interest on the website. With salary credited, just spend 500 monthly to unlock (the other is 3 giro payment). You just need to fulfill 2/3.

The one card is your atm, visa and paywave, nets flash able.

Before the latest adjustment, with 150k, spend 500 you unlock 500 per month, you see that in your account by the 3rd monthly. Now you get 400++
*
Thanks for mentioning the UOB One Account. I liked that the minimum amount is 1000 SGD rather than 3000 SGD of the other two (i.e. DBS Multiplier and OCBC360). Interest is not too far off either.

The One Card being the 'UOB One Debit Card' that comes combo with the UOB One Account right? They are promoting the Mastercard version which is not applicable with NETS contactless apparently, will see if can get the Visa version.

QUOTE(gnc88 @ Jul 30 2025, 08:08 AM)
Yes, I am referring to that card. KOPITIAM is a brand of hawker foodcourt owned by NTUC (Fairprice). Since TRUST or LINK card is a collab between NTUC and SCB, you enjoy 10% off when you pay using FairPrice App and link your TRUST or LINK card.
Sales folks more than happy to sign you up. Just ensure you keep track of when you cancelled as there's a ~12 month cooling period to be eligible to be reclassified as new sign up to enjoy welcome gifts. Due to this, I started cancelling my dormant credit cards.
This is good advise. Apart from UOB, OCBC and DBS also have such facilities which they term as 'Workplace banking'. So if you [1] credit your salary, [2] spend on credit cards, [3] do investment and [4] buy insurance, you increase/multiply your account interest - e.g. DBS Multiplier. https://www.dbs.com.sg/personal/deposits/ba...earn/multiplier
*
Ah I see, so only applicable with those two credit cards. I probably need to wait 6 months before I can apply for any credit card so I'll keep this in mind for now.

I'll probably just link the UOB One Debit Card with the Fairprice app for some points first I guess.

QUOTE(malz89 @ Jul 30 2025, 11:31 AM)
I think TS needs to start with either DBS/POSB first before opening up either UOB or OCBC. If I'm not mistaken back then they didn't allow first timer to open with them without a bank account in sg.

Anyway TS you're too soon to consider a CC .. you need to work at least 6 months prior to apply iinm. Can also apply PR by then lol
*
Yeah it seems 6 months working in SG is what I need before applying for any CC. Sorry... 6 months working is enough to apply for PR? Isn't that really quick? LOL

QUOTE(Lescotesco @ Jul 30 2025, 01:22 PM)
yeah paynow is accepted almost everywhere, but i still prefer paywave because of the samsung point and credit card rebate / point.

and when u reapply they wont be flag u la, they are happy to get a new customer cause u need to spend 500sgd in the first 30days to get the free gift.
*
Yeah paywave for CC, need wait 6 months first, will just use debit card for now.

Cancelling and applying for new CC goes in to some sort of record no? I know in Malaysia it is recorded in CCRIS? But I suppose it is not a crime so should be safe.

I'm assuming it's also easier for Malaysians to get PR? LOL

Will figure out down the line whether I want to get PR or not, but seems to me it's mostly upsides if I do so.

Little downside from PR apart from CPF contribution. To be honest, I, personally, have not come across many who willingly stays on EP without trying for PR. It's a career suicide to be held at ransom by employer unless you are on fantastic expat package that Singapore is just a stepping stone before going elsewhere.
*
Hmmm makes sense, if you lose your job on EP, I think you will only have like 2 weeks to find a new one or you would have to leave SG. Not an issue for PR of course. Extra 20% on top for CPF from employer side too.

should be can, my wife apply in the 7-8th months and me apply in the 9th month cause i m working in jb for the first 2 months (salary to my wife sg account) so i better play safe and wait for 6 payslip under my name first.

After around 8 months wait we both got our PR.

for malaysian chinese i heard it is much easier our salary didnt even meet the EP criteria for age 23 when we are close to 30 haha.
*
Not stated officially but I suppose it is an open secret that it is the easiest for Malaysian Chinese? lol

You applied for PR when you were working in SG after about 6 months, and then waited 8 more months for the result?

Question for those that are working in Singapore. When you first landed a job there, there isn't a need for the SG Employer to be given details regarding MY Tax number/contribution right? Presumably because you will have a new SG Tax number and the tax information/history in Malaysia becomes irrelevant?

E.g. Y2025 Tax, 8 months in MY, 4 months in SG; SG will need details of 8 months of MY Taxes or they only bother with the 4 months I was working in SG when filing to IRAS?

Your SG employer does not need your MY tax number or details of your MY income for IRAS filing. For YA 2025, IRAS will only be concerned with the 4 months you worked in SG, and your MY tax history for the prior 8 months is irrelevant unless it involves income taxable in SG (e.g., services rendered in SG). You should, however, ensure compliance with MY tax obligations for the 8 months you worked there, as MY may have its own requirements for reporting foreign income or filing taxes.
*
As in settle everything with LHDN before leaving, SG Company and IRAS are not bothered with anything prior to employment in SG. Alrighty then! Thanks!
