Hi guys noob here. I am planning to get a new laptop but am lost on some of the specs, hope you guys can really help me out. very sorry if this is not the place to post this here.

Wan to know, is there a performance difference between a 8600gs with 256mb GDDR3 or 8600gt with 256mb DDR2? I was reading this discussion here but it stops half way without any conclusion. Knowing that the GT is a faster card then the GS, would the DDR2 just be a bottleneck? or is the GDDR3 with the GS just a marketing hype and overspec-ed?

Also just read that Directx 10.1 is coming out soon. Will the current crop of 8600gt/gs run dx10.1?

NEC 6310 specs here 8600gs w/ dedicated 256 GDDR3
Asus F8Sv specs here with Ext 256MB VRAM (read that is was a DDR2)
Is there something to worry about when they say "external 256MB VRAM" since for me it sounds like shared memory versus dedicated memory

Thanks a bunch icon_rolleyes.gif

In short, the GT would perform better than the GS because of the addtional stream processors. Yes, the GDDR2 cripples it, but it'll still perform better than the GS. No, just like how the 7 series are not able to utilize dx10, the current 8 series can' support dx10.1.

Nvidia has announced that they have no plan on implementing DX10.1 on their upcoming 9 series.

No, Vram is Vram and turbocache is turbocache.

Get the GDDR3 8600m GT if you're that worried.

its a conspiracy i tell you! all just to make you get newer gc with every new revision of directx lol. wish it was back in the old days where new directx was just a software upgrade.

no.... even old time graphic card direct X is supported by hardware. Even if u have geforce 6 series or 7 series u still can install directX 10 in Window Vista but those non directX 10 supported gc will not able to run directX 10 features same goes to the gc previously.
