US and China Reach Framework Deal to Extend Trade War Truce

• The United States and China have agreed to a framework deal that extends their trade war truce, following two days of talks in London focused on export restrictions of rare earths and semiconductors.

• This framework aims to implement the previously agreed-upon Geneva consensus, addressing concerns about China's restrictions on critical minerals and US export curbs on semiconductors, vital for various industries.

• While the framework addresses immediate concerns regarding rare earth minerals and magnets, the wider tariff dispute triggered by Trump's tariffs remains unresolved, with negotiations set to continue.

• Despite cautious optimism from some investors, analysts remain wary, noting past instances where positive in-person meetings yielded little progress upon the negotiating teams' return to their respective capitals, highlighting the potential for future setbacks.

Raw materials production is not so much about supply chain, more about their willingness to sacrifice environment and revise their laws. PRC also has many patented rare earth refining techniques that they can’t simply use for their own production.

Most media said it will take the west at least 10years just to replace PRC supply. With that said, 10years ago the west already talked about avoiding relying on PRC for rare earth but 10 years later PRC still supplied over 95% of the stuff biggrin.gif

Seems like from China POV, a deal is still far far away. US still doesn't want to sell high end chips and equipment but want free flow critical minerals, which China doesn't agree to.

QUOTE
White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said on Monday that the US could lift recently imposed export controls on goods such as semiconductors if China sped up the delivery of rare earths and magnets that are crucial for the US economy. But Hassett stressed any easing would not include the "very, very high-end Nvidia stuff", referring to Nvidia's most advanced artificial-intelligence chips that have been blocked from going to China.

So it seems the US administration is still doing its profit and loss calculations.

The US administration seeks a de facto decoupling with China in high-tech and strategic sectors, while still trying to maintain the trade ties that it relies on for life necessities, agriculture and resources, including rare earths products, and forcing China to open its market to US business. So China is left with no choice but to fight for its core interests. If the US administration persists with this approach, its talks with China will turn into a protracted war based on the two economies' capacity to withstand even harsher stress tests in the future at the cost of the global economy and world trade.

Doesn't sound very agreeable to me.
