Many types of common fruits are imported, they were never luxury item unless govt decided that b40 should no longer be able to afford them.

I am going to be realistic here, you can find almost no local fruit in your usual supermarket like Lotus because local fruit for some reason almost always sell much more expensive than imported option.
Banana usually imported from Philipines. Mango, pineapple usually imported from Thailand. Dragon fruit is from Vietnam. Apple, orange don't even need to mention is 100% imported. So what can the people buy that is SST free? |

Can try those FAMA stalls if there are some near your place. Hopefully will be cheaper, and you can also support our local farmers. ![]() Not all fruit are imported, there are local variants eg bananas, papayas, watermelon, mangos, pomelos, manggis, cempedak, durian, pineapples, etc littlefire liked this post

What's the point...
Local production is just not enough to support consumption. Now local fruits are also going to be expensive AF because of increased demand. |

Its quite silly to tax fruits la. The government should encourge people to eat more healthy and give tax exemption for healthier food stuff like fruits, not tax them. Instead, the government gives subsidy for sugar and cooking oil, all of which the health ministry campagins to kurang gula and kurang makanan goreng. And you wonder why we are an obese nation. Its like reading la. Mahathir had his flaws but when he gave tax exemptions for books, there was an increase in people buying and reading books, at least in my circles. People would go buy books claim for tax. Even Najib's book voucher was benefical in some way. And this government decided to give it to teachers this year instead of student, alasan tak ada duit. Tapi ada duit untuk benda lain. Its going to end up like the beras issue where local rice is stamped as import rice to sell it at higher price. Honestly, I dont know what this government is doing. Getting priorities wrong and giving excuses for everything. mycolumn, countingcrows, and 2 others liked this post

QUOTE(Satan Fallen One @ Jun 11 2025, 07:37 PM) I am going to be realistic here, you can find almost no local fruit in your usual supermarket like Lotus because local fruit for some reason almost always sell much more expensive than imported option. GuavaBanana usually imported from Philipines. Mango, pineapple usually imported from Thailand. Dragon fruit is from Vietnam. Apple, orange don't even need to mention is 100% imported. So what can the people buy that is SST free? |

When people start switching to local fruits, the prices of local fruits will skyrocket. Then, many people will start reducing their fruit intake. As it is, I think many are already not eating enough fruits.
Not going to be a good outcome. |

QUOTE(loserguy @ Jun 11 2025, 07:50 PM) Can try those FAMA stalls if there are some near your place. Hopefully will be cheaper, and you can also support our local farmers. Err.... I have visited these stalls before.![]() Not all fruit are imported, there are local variants eg bananas, papayas, watermelon, mangos, pomelos, manggis, cempedak, durian, pineapples, etc Not all are local. They sell mixture of locals & imported fruits especially those from Thailand. Their best sellers & best profits comes from selling Thailand fruits. Malaysian don't view orchard farms as a good career prospects. And Msia gomen support is no where near Thai gomen support & development. Example : Harum Manis. - Too expensive, too many fakes/low quality. Doesn't have the consistency quality and quantity of Thai mangoes. |

So I would assume that either not enough production to support local consumption or we sell our good stuff and buy lower grade from overseas, like what we do for petroleum. Watermelon Banana Papaya Star fruit Mango Seasonal Rambutan Mangosteen Why Malaysians like to angkat amdk fruits like apple? White supremacy In any case, its not about angkat orang putih punya fruit. Why la want to tax healthy stuff? Kalau dia makan apple pun, biarla, at least not eating rubbish food. If you want to tax processed food which contains fruits, then ok la. But not fresh fruits. Lepas ini anak mintak nak makan buah, bapa cakap jangan, makan gula sebab lagi murah. |

Tax the processed fruits, imported fruit cocktails and juices and cordials. Not the fresh fruit and produce.
We are a food importing country we don’t grow enough of what we want to eat. Taxing it will just worsen the health and well-being of the country. |
