I think football as a culture is just not ingrained in us. Yes, we like to watch it, but how many people actually is willing to play it day in day out, or send their kids to coaching academy, let them go padang and play, etc etc.

We also have other sports and entertainment that pulls away talents from football.

Similar to Brazil, football is weaved in to part of their lives and it's also a real chance at a better life. So the pool of players is bigger, the skills to shine is stronger and the top few are way better.

I think people don't realise the gap between a great player in local league to actually being professional. The best player I've played with and represented state level told me he can't even hack it professionally. And that dude is like 1000x better than the rest of us.

Brazil Wagner Lopes but Japan work out extra mile on league and academy system to grow together.

Some Pak Arab occasionally recruit Africans but use Arab names hence went undetected unlike Qatar which gone full blown

In ASEAN scene, Singapore used the naturalisation card in 2000s to bring them multiple Tiger Cups.. Bennett, Duric, Qiu Li, Agu etc
But they failed to sustain it without proper youth academy
Indonesia and Philippines recruited few too but gave up half way before the recent Holland2.0 move

Malaysia had tried both cards but the players are still not good enough for Asia stage, so the recent heritage 2.0 has brought stronger A cards

Slight different though. HK is "international city-state" (new modern nationhood concept) macam Singapore. The mindset on accepting "heritage" and "naturalized" is easier. Human movement is higher.

I remember few years ago when Cambodia hosted the SEA Games 2023, the basketball team was basically all black players (naturalized; starting team). And it gets backlash from the public.

In the Winter Olympic Games 2022, PRC's ice hockey team was basically Canadian Team B. LEL. It was an "experimental work". Testing the public reaction.

Mindset matters. The old traditional statehood or new modern nationhood concept.
