MCA requests government to lower LPG prices to SMEs, avoid consumers burdened with increased prices of goods, services

The Economic Affairs Committee and SMEs MCA received many complaints from associations and business entrepreneurs lately in relation to Ops Gasak conducted by the Ministry of Internal Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) starting 1 May 2025.

Most of them complain are impressed by the government's new move requiring the use of subsidized liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or better known as purple gas barrels to their businesses, particularly beverage and food vendors, laundry and businesses that use LPG.

The shift to the use of commercial LPG which costs around RM65 to RM70 for 14kg cylinder, as opposed to RM26.60 to RM30 for subsidized gas, which is an increase in prices by up to 2.5 times has caused an increase in their operating costs while triggering a chain reaction that ultimately affects the citizens as consumers. This was also acknowledged by the Chairman of the Association of Malay Laundry Entrepreneurs (Mula), Zarina Ismail.

Thus, the government through KPDN should reconsider and reevaluate this step from various angles, moreover many businesses affected such as small traders and coffee shops operated by individuals from the income group B40 as well as M40, not luxury restaurants.

MCA agrees if the entrepreneurs of this business are not allowed from using subsidized LPG worth RM26.60, but at the same time, the MCA also describes that commercial LPG required to them at RM70 per tub is also unreasonable.

MCA therefore suggests that more appropriate pricing be introduced so that it does not drastically affect the business entrepreneurs and their consumers or customers especially abstaining B40 and M40.

In the near future, the Economic Affairs Committee and SMEs MCA will hold a meeting with the Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietors' General Association in relation to this matter. We will also extend the outcome of the meeting to the next government hoping that a win-win solution can be achieved.

What's important for MCA, the citizens as consumers should no longer be burdened with the increasing cost of living which is now becoming crippling.

It's kinda real if an eateries is using more than 3 cylinders at once. Basically you're allowed to store and use up to 3 cylinders if 14 kg LPG. More than that need to register and that not sure had to use purple or not

the rule mentions the business shouldn't store/use 3 LPG cylinders at a time, and the law was there since 2021.

Unless you are dining out at big restaurant/hotels all the time, shouldn't be affected, and the law was in effect since 2021, restaurants should have follow the law since then, price hike is not an excuse.

I said single shoplot restaurant. Not big2 restaurant. I talk to few of them, they said 3 tanks can actually last for few days, depending on traffic.

If your business is better than that, then you deserved not to be subsidized.

I wouldn’t complaint, but rather avoid it altogether if I feel that the increase is unjustified.

I am in a single shoplot F&B boss .... what restaurant only has a single burner? Most will have at least 2 or 3 so you need to use & store more than 3 gas tongs, understand that......

Whether got sub or not, all additional costs are always passed down....that's business boss.

I run a medium sized restaurant. To maintain margins I have to increase my prices roughly 10%. If you operate you would know how significant this will effect f&b businesses. Margins for myslef are already very thin at ~10%. Most f&b's are already running on even smaller margins.

Took me 3 years to break even on startup costs.
