IJM Corp Bhd (KL:IJM) has secured government approval to proceed with a RM1.4 billion extension to its New Pantai Expressway (NPE), which was scrapped by the government in 2012.
At the time, IJM vowed to appeal the decision with a revised alignment.
In a statement, IJM said construction of the 15-kilometre extension is set to begin in the third quarter of 2025 and expected to be completed by 2029.
The fully elevated stretch will link the Pantai Dalam Toll Plaza to the Jalan Istana Interchange via Jalan Syed Putra, connecting three major highways — the existing NPE, Besraya and the upcoming Like expressway.
The route is projected to divert around 40% of traffic from Jalan Bangsar, significantly easing congestion and cutting travel times during peak hours.
"This extension allows the project to be financed responsibly while enhancing IJM’s recurring income," said IJM Group CEO and managing director Datuk Lee Chun Fai in a statement. "It also aligns with our long-term strategy to manage and eventually monetise infrastructure assets."
The project, fully funded by the concessionaire with no government expenditure, is part of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Master Plan 2040. It is expected to inject an estimated RM5.6 billion into the local economy, supporting developments in surrounding areas such as Pantai Sentral Park and Bangsar South.
The extension will incorporate smart infrastructure features including multi-lane free flow (MLFF) tolling, real-time CCTV surveillance, energy-efficient lighting and electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging stations at dedicated laybys.
IJM confirmed that existing toll rates along the NPE will remain unchanged until the expiry of the concession period.
The company’s Infrastructure Toll Division, which manages its highway assets, will lead the project.
The NPE currently spans 19.6km, connecting Subang Jaya to Kuala Lumpur, with three toll plazas and 44 lanes. A key component of the expressway, the Kuchai Link, serves as a vital connector to Besraya, enhancing traffic dispersal within the Klang Valley.
