WHILE campaigning for the PKR deputy leader post, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli declared his readiness to resign from the cabinet should he lose his position as PKR deputy president in the upcoming party elections on May 23.
On Friday, PKR announced that Nurul Izzah Anwar had won the elections for the deputy leader post, defeating Rafizi in the process.
“If I lose, I will resign as minister and return to being an ordinary MP,” he said during a session of the Yang Bakar Menteri: Yang Berhenti Menteri? Podcast, held at the MBSJ multipurpose hall on May 10.
Rafizi, who said he would sit in Parliament as an ordinary member which would allow him to stay close to the “rakyat,” is yet to make any statement on his promise.
Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the PKR party election is an internal matter and unrelated to any Cabinet reshuffle.
Speaking to reporters after a briefing with media editors at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya, Anwar emphasised that the party election is a friendly competition aimed at strengthening PKR by leveraging its members’ capabilities.
He dismissed any connection between the election and cabinet changes, noting that while individuals may have ambitions to resign or fill vacancies, he has no plans to alter the cabinet.
“We cannot prevent other people’s ambitions to resign or fill vacancies, he wants to vacate the post, he wants to fill, that is normal,” said Anwar.
On the other hand, UMNO President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that UMNO is not greedy for ministerial positions following the loss of two PKR ministers, Minister of Economy Rafizi Ramli and Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, in the PKR party elections.
Zahid, who is also a deputy prime minister, said UMNO knows its limits and is not interested in interfering in the affairs of other parties. —May 25, 2025
