KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile Sdn Bhd has appointed Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™ as its key fibre backhaul partner to accelerate the deployment of its 5G network nationwide.

Under the 10-year partnership agreement, worth RM2.4 billion, TM will provide U Mobile a comprehensive suite of backhaul infrastructure services, including fibre leased line access to U Mobile’s 5G Radio Access Network, data centre and TM Edge Facility leasing for Points of Interconnect.

U Mobile chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck said, together with TM and other partners, the company is committed to achieving 80 per cent coverage for populated areas within a year.

"To meet those targets, we need to have strong partnerships. Through this shared expertise and technical capabilities, U Mobile will be able to demonstrate agility to accelerate the deployment of our next 5G network to support national digital ambitions," he said in his speech at the signing ceremony here today.

The partnership was formalised today at a signing ceremony, witnessed by Communications Minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Wong added that the partnership would also see TM fiberise almost 70 per cent of U Mobile's 5G sites.

"With TM's comprehensive backhaul solutions, U Mobile will be able to fast-track our network deployment across the country, while ensuring high availability, good resiliency, ultra-low latency and high bandwidth," he added.

With TM’s extensive nationwide fibre footprint, spanning over 740,000 kilometres, U Mobile is poised to expedite the rollout of its Next Gen 5G network nationwide.

The strategic partnership will enable U Mobile to tap into TM’s comprehensive 5G Mobile Backhaul Service to ensure high network performance and reliable connectivity for both enterprises and consumers.

Meanwhile, TM group chief executive officer Amar Huzaimi Md Deris said the collaboration underscores its commitment to building an inclusive, future-ready infrastructure that fuels innovation, enhances connectivity, and drives digital progress nationwide. - Bernama
