On April 23, 2025, at 2:36 p.m., Fairfax County Police stopped 36-year-old Jamal Wali for speeding and an expired safety sticker in the 4000 block of Majestic Lane, near Greenbriar.

Wali, visibly agitated, informed the officer he was armed, refused to provide ID or registration, and shouted profanities, claiming mistreatment as a former U.S. military translator.

Bodycam and Wali’s GoPro footage show him yelling, “I should have served with the f—ing Taliban,” and setting up a camera, escalating tensions, per Fox News and FCPD releases.

Two additional officers arrived; Wali reached for his holstered gun, firing one bullet that hit both officers’ arms on the driver’s side, then shattering a parked car’s window across the street.

Officer Ian Lachapelle, on the passenger side, fired four shots, striking and killing Wali, who was pronounced dead at a hospital, per WTOP and Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis.

The injured officers, with 19 and 18 years of experience, were treated for non-life-threatening arm wounds and released; Lachapelle, a two-year veteran, is on restricted duty, per FOX 5 DC.

Davis praised Lachapelle’s actions for saving the officers’ lives, calling the incident an “attempted murder,” with no charges expected against officers, per NBC4 Washington and FCPD’s May 23 footage release.
