JOHOR BARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that the government will not raise the price of RON95 petrol for Malaysians.

He acknowledged that the proposal to increase the price of RON95 petrol had previously been presented to the Cabinet, but he did not agree with it.

"I am considering the issue of RON95 petrol subsidies... some have proposed increasing the price for the public.

"However, I disagree with a price hike. Instead, the price of RON95 can be gradually reduced in line with time and market conditions.

"But for the four million foreigners in this country, petrol prices must be increased... foreign nationals are enjoying RM3 to RM4 billion in subsidies. Perhaps in the future, buying RON95 petrol will require showing a national ID card," he said.

The PKR president said this when winding up the debate on his policy speech here today.

On Oct 18, during the presentation of Budget 2025, Anwar discussed targeted RON95 petrol subsidies, expected to be implemented by mid-year.

He said the proposal could save up to RM8 billion, as currently, 40 per cent of RON95 subsidies are enjoyed by foreigners and the ultra-wealthy.

The savings, he added, would be channelled towards the well-being of the wider population and fund improvements in education, healthcare, and public transportation.

Then, Anwar said that 85 per cent of the population would not be affected by the subsidy rationalisation.

As such, the prime minister stressed that the people should not be doubtful of the government's approach, which prioritises the interests of the majority.

Mr Anwar said the government currently spends RM20 billion a year on blanket subsidies for RON95 petrol, which unfairly benefit the top 15 per cent of earners - as well as foreigners - in Malaysia.

so this how a?

In all probability this RON95 subsidy rationalisation is formula man's idea and the driving force behind it.

Now formula man is out of the picture, so does this move lah laugh.gif

BMX oredi seen the writing on the wall - proceed with this subsidy rationalisation, and he's guaranteed to become a one term PM.

Not that he won outright the last round too; he had to compromise and form the UG with the then much detested BN

What an idiotic plan. The foreigners are contributing to the nation's economy and doing all the work the locals do not want to do. Also not earning big bucks and many are exploited as it is. It is not like they are here on holiday.
