I always envy oversea flights they can offer such generous amount to voluntarily kick you off your flight. You can even negotiate to be put up in 5-star hotel and fly business class in your next flight.

Why local airline here don't do that?

Who said so? I was late to board and the economy seat are all full. So, MAS put me in First Class from Malaysia to Japan and said sorry that the First Class to LA was full that I need to go back to coach.

Not for this. The situation you mentioned is different they need to take flight on the next day.

I was once got bumped off because missing the connecting flight due to delay in Japan. So, have to take JAL on different route through Honolulu. It would be several hours wait. So, they told me to just show flight ticket to get whatever food you like at an eatery while waiting. laugh.gif

That later flight has got nothing to do with being bumped off. They are attracted to the $$ offered so decided to inconvenient themselves voluntarily

True. There's one time I was waiting for my flight at Reykjavik airport, next gate keep repeating announcement asking for volunteers. It's was a Sunday pm flight to Seattle

Every 15 mins announcement they keep increasing the $$, ballooning to USD1000 and still no takers. I wished I was on that flight

Our airlines do overbook their flight. Travel agents are able to sell more (using their system) than what we public see on airlines website

Maybe not to get fined or need to pay much more to customer for missing flight due to overbooking. I'm the offering is still good for them.

The problem in full pledged airline is that you can change flight date. There are chances many just do not checked in to inform later that they want to change flight. Therefore, flight is not full. I think they sell ticket to waiting list passenger within certain hours before flight for those now showing up in time.

This.

My son got bumped off twice.

£600 compo plus hotel and meals.

Also claimed travel insurance after the event. IIRC, there is a sliding scale for travel insurance for block of 6 hours delay.

Enough to cover the price of his return tix.

Both occasions on Middle Eastern airlines.

Most likely they sold a last minute tiicket for more than 3k like maybe 4k?Or they make a loss for one seat and cover it back with others?

From Google:

The Montreal Convention, or MC99, protects millions of air passengers who fly internationally every year. It covers damages to travelers’ health or luggage, including when flights have been delayed or canceled. However, unlike regulations such as the EU’s EC 261, which provides clear guidelines about compensation amounts, the Montreal Convention operates on a case-by-case basis and is much more difficult to navigate.

Montreal Convention compensation

What is the Montreal Convention?

The Montreal Convention (MC99) is a universal treaty that holds airlines liable for injuries or damages that occurred either en route or as a result of delayed or canceled flights, as well as damaged or lost luggage and cargo.

What does this mean for passengers? Well, if you can prove you lost money because of something the airline did (such as delay or cancel your flight, or lose your luggage) the Montreal Convention says you have the right to claim that money back.

MC99 doesn’t offer the same level of air passenger protection as Europe’s EC 261 regulation, for example. However it is currently honored by over 135 countries. That means it creates a good basic standard of protection which applies to almost all international flights worldwide.
What compensation can I get?

The Montreal Convention does not specify any amounts of compensation in the case of delays or cancellations. Rather it allows passengers to claim for damages. So if you miss a prepaid reservation, have to pay for an extra night at a hotel, or rack up any other unforeseen expenses due to air travel problems, you can get reimbursed up to a maximum amount of €7,850.

MC99 also provides financial compensation, up to a limit of €1,900, for luggage issues, including damaged bags, delayed bags, or lost luggage. Be aware there are strict time limits on these laws, so you must file a claim as soon as possible.

Can’t remember the exact amount. One was about the same as the airline compensation. The other one was about RM1K. It’s calculated on the basis of a block of 6 hours. So, if you are offered the next flight out within the 6 hours, wait out!

Flights originating and flying into any EU countries, you can quote the Montreal Convention if the airline is acting iffy about compo.
