Bekas perdana menteri dua kali, Dr Mahathir Mohamad berkata dia akan memansuhkan hukuman berkaitan isu 3R (kaum, agama dan institusi diraja) sekiranya kembali memegang jawatan itu.

Mahathir, yang akan mencecah usia 100 tahun pada 10 Julai ini, berkata langkah itu adalah "perkara pertama" yang akan dilakukan jika dia diberi peluang memimpin negara sekali lagi.

"Saya mesti tahu apa yang rakyat fikirkan. Kalau mulut mereka ditutup, mereka mungkin berfikiran buruk terhadap kamu, tetapi kamu pula rasa semuanya baik-baik sahaja," katanya dalam sesi dialog semasa pelancaran bukunya di Putrajaya hari ini.

"Apabila kamu tidak memberi respons terhadap masalah dan perasaan (rakyat), maka negara tidak akan maju (kerana) kita perlukan kebebasan bersuara," katanya.

Mahathir berkata walaupun dia bukan lagi perdana menteri dan tidak berminat lagi memegang jawatan itu, dia sedia berkongsi pandangan dengan kerajaan demi kebaikan negara.

"Kalau saya jadi perdana menteri semula — minta dijauhkan Tuhan — saya tahu beberapa perkara yang perlu saya lakukan.

"Walaupun saya bukan perdana menteri, jika kerajaan (kini) sudi mendengar orang tua ini, saya sedia berkongsi beberapa idea," tambahnya.
