 Microsoft to lay off around 3% of workforce in org

(Reuters) - Microsoft said on Tuesday it was laying off less than 3% of its workforce, or around 6,000 employees, as the technology giant looks to rein in costs while funneling billions of dollars into its ambitious bet on artificial intelligence. The cuts will be across all levels and geographies and are likely the largest since Microsoft laid off 10,000 employees in 2023. The company let a small number of staff go in January over performance-related issues, but the new cuts are not related to that, according to CNBC, which first reported the news.

Big Tech has been spending heavily on AI as they see the new technology as a major growth engine, while slashing costs elsewhere to safeguard profit margins. Google has also laid off hundreds of employees in the past year, as it looks to control costs and prioritize AI, media reports have said."We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace," a Microsoft spokesperson said on mail. The company, which had 228,000 workers as of June last year, regularly uses layoffs to prioritize staffing in its main focus areas. Tuesday's move comes weeks after Microsoft posted stronger-than-expected growth in its cloud-computing business Azure and blowout results in the latest quarter, calming investor worries in an uncertain economy.

But the cost of scaling its AI infrastructure has weighed on profitability, with Microsoft Cloud margins narrowing to 69% in the March quarter from 72% a year ago.

only applicable to shithole countries like the usa and australia where they can fire without notice or cause.

i think even malaysia cannot fire like this, need to masuk PIP first, same like europe

bodo, there is a job i interview , sudah 3 rounds, after 4 months cakap the position has been cancelled due to company new direction. ptuih . kimak now many MNC just open hiring without confirming the strategy

another interview, 3rd round interview can tell me "this position still a blunt", waste people time, sei sohai

biasa la.. want better benefits and gaji besar.. all this want lo.. have been thru that done that... in the end frusfration etc etc competition for work is stiff out there.. many jobless ppl applying for 1 single role.. crazy man

They laid of in everywhere but ramping up in Malaysia

Im surprised to see last week that when I raised a ticket for Microsoft Premium support I got the engineers in KL Sentral office instead of the usual EU, China or US sites. From my chat with them they are expanding in Malaysia

oooo didnt know if got severance can fire here too.

in norway one of the company my uncle working in, got a pakistani right after confirmation took mc and it has been 2 years since he came back to work but they still have to pay half and gov pay the other half

mad la which doctor he went to gave this long mc, must be his family

still cant fire him haha

AI makes intelligence cheaper. More knowledge not equal to high pay in the future. Best to train your body instead as muscles are the money maker in the future.
